Ford Focus (2018-2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Great to drive | Ford doesn't make it anymore |
| Ample space for tall passengers | Some rivals have bigger boots |
| Excellent EcoBoost petrol engines | Entry-level cars don't feel as dynamic |
Quick Summary
The Ford Focus (2018-2025), known as the Mk4, is a class-leading family hatchback that rewrote the rulebook when it first arrived in 1998. This generation stayed true to those attributes, delivering outstanding handling and steering response combined with a practical, well-finished interior. The Focus grew in size and weight over the years, but even in its final form, it trumped the competition for those who enjoy driving. Unveiled at Ford's UK headquarters in Essex in 2018, the fourth-generation Focus received a refresh in 2021, just a year before Ford retired the nameplate.
The Focus offers a comprehensive range of petrol and diesel engines to suit all needs. Pre-facelift models featured 1.0- and 1.5-litre turbocharged EcoBoost petrol engines alongside 1.5- and 2.0-litre diesel options. Post-facelift models introduced 48V mild-hybrid technology, with 1.0-litre petrol and mild-hybrid variants delivering 98bhp to 153bhp. The sporty Focus ST offered 276bhp petrol or 187bhp diesel engines. All models provide excellent fuel economy, with the hatchback offering a 375-litre boot and the estate providing 635 litres. The facelifted model benefited from significant technology upgrades, including SYNC4 infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a 13.0-inch touchscreen and optional 12.3-inch digital driver display.
Best for: Drivers seeking a well-rounded family hatchback with class-leading handling, a wide range of efficient engines, and practical interior space. Ideal for those who prioritise driving dynamics and want a car that's both comfortable for daily use and enjoyable on challenging roads.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking striking styling or flashy interiors, those prioritising maximum boot space, or those wanting the latest Ford nameplate (production has ended).

The Verdict
You should buy the Focus if: You prioritise driving dynamics and handling, seek a practical family hatchback with excellent engines, and want a car that's both comfortable for daily use and enjoyable on challenging roads.
Consider alternatives if: You desire striking styling, flashy interiors, maximum boot space, or prefer a car still in active production.
Competitive Position: The Ford Focus (2018-2025) is a strong contender in the family hatchback market, offering class-leading handling and steering response that few rivals can match. Whilst the Volkswagen Golf boasts a crisper, more modern interior and the BMW 1 Series offers premium appeal, the Focus delivers superior driving dynamics at a competitive price. The Vauxhall Astra lags behind in overall refinement. The Focus's comprehensive engine range, from efficient EcoBoost petrols to capable diesels and mild-hybrid options, provides flexibility for various driving needs. Its practical interior, spacious rear seats, and well-designed cabin make it an excellent all-rounder. Though production has ended, used examples remain highly desirable for those seeking an engaging, reliable, and versatile family car.

What people say
The car was perfect for my needs to travel daily up and down the motorway to work, a 30 mile round trip. excellent value for money.
No 5 star rating due to most engines being fitted with wet timing belt. An absolutely disastrous idea in comparison to a chain. Unfortunately many manufacturers are starting to use wet belts, which inevitably will lead to expensive belt failures, and even simple replacements are expensive. In the case of the Focus a great car with in built fragility by Ford
Reliable, comfortable economical stylish, easy to work on. Need I say more
I brought a 2016 focus st3 good interior size nice features and really nice drive. Really nice sporty car and still good for family
Its a good car and is worth the money.
