Ford Kuga (2020-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Enjoyable to drive	The cabin feels a bit low-rent in places
Roomy and practical interior	Some rivals have more luggage space
Plug-in hybrid will appeal to company car drivers	It's hard to apply the plug-in hybrid's brakes smoothly

Quick Summary

The Ford Kuga (2020-present) is a practical and engaging family SUV that combines genuine driving enjoyment with everyday usability. This generation represents a significant step forward for the model, finally delivering a machine that competes effectively with class leaders. The facelifted 2024 model strengthens the package further, featuring Ford's latest SYNC 4 infotainment system with 5G connectivity, enhanced safety features, and a choice of petrol, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid powertrains. With boot capacity ranging from 412 to 553 litres (expandable to 1,534 litres with rear seats folded), it offers excellent space for families and commuters alike.

The standout performer is the plug-in hybrid variant, delivering 239bhp with an impressive electric-only range of 37.2-42.8 miles and official fuel economy of 235-313mpg, making it particularly attractive to company car drivers. The regular hybrid offers a sensible balance of performance and efficiency, whilst the conventional 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol provides an affordable entry point. Running costs are competitive, with the Titanium and ST-Line trims sitting beneath the £40,000 VED threshold. Ford's three-year, 60,000-mile warranty and extended service plan options provide additional peace of mind. The Kuga remains somewhat overlooked in a crowded SUV market, yet those who drive one consistently enjoy the experience.

Best for: Families seeking a practical, engaging SUV with low running costs, company car drivers interested in the plug-in hybrid's tax benefits, and buyers wanting a well-rounded vehicle that drives better than most rivals.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising premium cabin materials, maximum boot space compared to rivals, or seeking a vehicle with the smoothest brake feel in plug-in hybrid form.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Kuga if: You're seeking a practical, engaging family SUV with low running costs, interested in the plug-in hybrid's tax efficiency, or want a well-rounded vehicle that drives better than most rivals.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium cabin materials, require maximum boot space, or need the smoothest brake feel in plug-in hybrid form.

Competitive Position: The Ford Kuga is a solid contender in the crowded family SUV market, offering genuine driving enjoyment combined with practicality and competitive running costs. Whilst the Kia Sportage edges ahead on expert rating and the Hyundai Tucson scores higher with users, the Kuga holds its own with a strong overall rating and excellent value proposition. The plug-in hybrid variant is particularly compelling for company car drivers, offering impressive efficiency and range. Though often overlooked, the Kuga deserves serious consideration from anyone shopping in this segment, delivering a rewarding ownership experience that belies its underdog status.
