Customers say
The Ford Ranger is well-regarded for its strong performance and capability, with many owners enjoying its powerful engine, good towing capacity, and spacious interior, particularly favoring the excellent headroom. While the overall comfort and driving experience receive high praise, some drivers have noted minor concerns, especially relating to the vehicle's construction quality and minor shortcomings, such as the plastics in the cabin. Safety and economical fuel consumption are additional highlights, making it a solid choice for those needing a reliable workhorse or a leisure vehicle.

Ford Ranger (2023-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Car-like build quality and levels of equipment | EcoBlue diesel engines have a poor reliability record |
| More enjoyable to drive than a pickup should be | Rival trucks from Isuzu and KGM are cheaper |
| Huge portrait-style touchscreen on some models | UK-spec Raptor is limited to 288bhp (US version gets 400bhp) |
Quick Summary
The Ford Ranger (2023-present) is a sophisticated pickup truck that blurs the line between commercial vehicle and family SUV. This latest generation builds on the proven T6 platform with bold, modern styling reminiscent of the American F-150, whilst maintaining the practical load bed and towing capability expected of a proper workhorse. Available in multiple body styles—double cab, extended cab, and single cab—with trim levels ranging from utilitarian XL to luxurious Platinum, the Ranger offers something for both commercial operators and lifestyle buyers. Engine options include 168bhp and 202bhp 2.0-litre diesels, a 237bhp 3.0-litre V6 diesel, a new 277bhp plug-in hybrid, and the high-performance 288bhp Raptor variant.
What sets the Ranger apart is its car-like driving experience and comprehensive technology. The 12-inch portrait touchscreen, leather seats with electric adjustment, and comprehensive safety features rival mainstream family SUVs. Practicality is excellent, with a 1.5-metre load bed, impressive rear-seat space, and a 3,500kg towing capacity on the Wildtrak. Running costs are reasonable for a vehicle of this size, though fuel economy varies significantly by engine choice. The plug-in hybrid offers up to 25 miles of electric-only range, whilst diesel variants achieve 27-33mpg. The Ranger represents excellent value compared to rivals, particularly the popular Wildtrak trim, making it the most car-like pickup truck available.
Best for: Buyers seeking a practical pickup with SUV-like comfort and technology, those needing genuine towing and load-carrying capability, and lifestyle purchasers who want a premium driving experience in a truck.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising fuel economy, buyers concerned about EcoBlue diesel reliability, or those seeking the cheapest pickup option on the market.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ford Ranger | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.1% | 4.4/5 |
| Toyota Hilux | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.4% | 4.2/5 |
| Volkswagen Amarok | 4/5 | N/A | 34.8% | 3.9/5 |
| Isuzu D-Max | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 21.9% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Ranger if: You want a practical pickup with SUV-like comfort and technology, need genuine towing and load-carrying capability, or seek a premium driving experience in a truck.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise fuel economy, are concerned about EcoBlue diesel reliability, or are seeking the cheapest pickup option available.
Competitive Position: The Ford Ranger (2023-present) is the most car-like pickup truck on sale, offering superior build quality, technology, and driving dynamics compared to rivals. Whilst the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max are capable alternatives, the Ranger's comprehensive equipment levels and enjoyable driving experience justify its premium positioning. The Volkswagen Amarok shares Ford's platform but lacks the Ranger's refinement. For buyers willing to pay more for a sophisticated, feature-rich pickup that doubles as a lifestyle vehicle, the Ranger is the standout choice in the segment.
