Ford S-Max (2015-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Better to drive than other MPVs | Third row is cramped compared with the Ford Galaxy's |
| Vast boot with the third row folded | Hybrid models aren't quite so good to drive |
| Well equipped | Petrol models are very thirsty |
Quick Summary
The Ford S-Max (2015-present) is a seven-seat MPV that defies expectations by combining genuine practicality with engaging driving dynamics. This second-generation model has remained one of the most recommendable seven-seaters available, offering a vast 2,000-litre boot with all rear seats folded, excellent visibility, and a multi-adjustable driving position that makes it surprisingly easy to manoeuvre despite its substantial size. All three middle-row seats feature Isofix mounting points, accommodating up to three child seats, whilst the individual middle seats slide and recline for enhanced comfort and flexibility.
The S-Max delivers a refined and composed driving experience that far exceeds typical MPV expectations, with supportive suspension, precise steering, and sweetly-weighted controls. Engine options have evolved significantly, with early models offering turbocharged petrols and multiple diesel variants, whilst later versions feature a 2.5-litre petrol hybrid with CVT automatic. Diesel engines provide the best balance of performance and fuel economy, achieving 45-50mpg on a run, whilst hybrid models deliver superior environmental credentials with 50mpg easily achievable on longer journeys. Well-equipped across all trims with standard features including dual-zone climate control, DAB radio, and parking sensors, the S-Max represents excellent value in the used market thanks to heavy new car discounting affecting residual values.
Best for: Families seeking a practical seven-seater with engaging driving dynamics, those prioritising versatility and boot space, and buyers wanting an MPV that's genuinely enjoyable to drive.
Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum third-row legroom, buyers seeking the latest hybrid technology for driving engagement, or those with a preference for petrol engines due to fuel consumption concerns.

The Verdict
You should buy the S-Max if: You're seeking a practical seven-seater that's genuinely enjoyable to drive, prioritising versatility and boot space, and wanting an MPV that delivers engaging dynamics alongside family-friendly practicality.
Consider alternatives if: You require maximum third-row legroom, prefer the latest hybrid technology for driving engagement, or have concerns about petrol engine fuel consumption.
Competitive Position: The Ford S-Max (2015-present) stands out in the seven-seat MPV market by delivering superior driving dynamics that rival many conventional cars. Whilst the Peugeot 5008 and Citroën Grand C4 Picasso offer comparable overall ratings and slightly better value percentages, the S-Max excels where it matters most: the driving experience. Its refined suspension, precise steering, and engaging character make it the standout choice for those unwilling to sacrifice enjoyment for practicality. With excellent equipment levels, strong fuel economy from diesel engines, and low servicing costs, the S-Max represents outstanding value in the used market, particularly for families who refuse to compromise on driving pleasure.

4.9 Overall rating
(6 reviews)Excellent and fascinating 2013 Ford S-Max. Good buy for the family.
I own a 59plate and absolutely love it. Looking at changing for another one a bit younger. I love the flexibility with the seven seats and the storage. It ticks all my boxes.👍🚗
Overall, this is a very good 7-seater. Downsides are that parts are expensive and it is prone to electrical faults.
Great 6 seater for reliability and comfort compare to Ford galaxy
Fab for family of 6. Seats in boot not for adults or teenagers as not much leg room. Prefer 2008/09 dash
