Ford S-Max (2015-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Better to drive than other MPVs | Third row is cramped compared with the Ford Galaxy's |
| Vast boot with the third row folded | Hybrid models aren't quite so good to drive |
| Well equipped | Petrol models are very thirsty |
Quick Summary
The Ford S-Max (2015-present) is a seven-seat MPV that defies expectations by combining exceptional practicality with genuinely engaging driving dynamics. Unlike most people carriers, the S-Max delivers a refined, responsive driving experience with impressive grip, precise steering and sweetly-weighted controls. With 2,000 litres of boot space when all rear seats are folded, it offers unparalleled versatility for families. The cabin features quality materials, excellent visibility, and clever storage solutions, including aircraft-style folding seat-back trays and triple Isofix points for child seats. A wide range of engines—including petrol, diesel and hybrid options—ensures there's a variant to suit different needs and budgets.
The S-Max's relatively unfashionable status compared to trendy SUVs means excellent value for money on the used market. Diesel engines offer the best balance of performance and fuel economy, achieving 45-50mpg, whilst later hybrid models deliver superior environmental credentials with 50mpg easily achievable. Servicing costs are competitive across Ford's dealer network. The S-Max remains one of the most recommendable seven-seat MPVs, offering a comfortable, agile and engaging drive that far exceeds expectations for such a large vehicle, whether on motorways, open roads or in busy city settings.
Best for: Families seeking a practical seven-seater with engaging driving dynamics, those wanting excellent value compared to SUVs, and drivers who prioritise versatility and comfort over badge appeal.
Not ideal for: Buyers needing maximum third-row legroom (the Galaxy offers more space), those seeking the latest hybrid technology, or drivers who prefer petrol engines due to fuel consumption concerns.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ford S-Max | 4/5 | 3.8/5 | 32.6% | 4.3/5 |
| Peugeot 5008 | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 35.1% | 4.4/5 |
| Citroën Grand C4 Picasso | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 35.3% | 4.2/5 |
| Volkswagen Touran | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 38.2% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the S-Max if: You're seeking a practical seven-seater with engaging driving dynamics, want excellent value compared to trendy SUVs, or prioritise versatility and comfort for family life.
Consider alternatives if: You need maximum third-row legroom, prefer the latest hybrid technology, or are concerned about petrol engine fuel consumption.
Competitive Position: The Ford S-Max (2015-present) stands out in the seven-seat MPV market by delivering driving enjoyment that rivals rarely match. Whilst the Peugeot 5008 and Volkswagen Touran score higher on user ratings and value deals, the S-Max offers superior driving dynamics and a more engaging experience. The Citroën Grand C4 Picasso provides a practical alternative but lacks the S-Max's driving finesse. For families unwilling to follow the SUV trend, the S-Max represents outstanding value, combining spaciousness, versatility and genuine driving pleasure in a single package that few competitors can match.

3.8 Overall rating
(13 reviews)Excellent and fascinating 2013 Ford S-Max. Good buy for the family.
Fab for family of 6. Seats in boot not for adults or teenagers as not much leg room. Prefer 2008/09 dash
Very spacious for a 7 seater. Has good boot space and added extras included.
Absolutely diabolical! Picked up the car and didn’t even make it home before I started having problems with it! How it passed its MOT without any advisories only God knows! Definitely not worth what I paid at all!!!
I had a Seat Alhambra before this so I’m basically comparing it to that. The S Max is a great family car but it has a few little annoying niggles that are not good. The automatic gearbox is a bit slow at responding unless you keep it in sports mode. The phone connected to Bluetooth can’t seem to ever select the right contact, keeps bringing up 3 or 4 on the screen then distracts you by asking you to choose when you have asked clearly who you want. Another annoying thing is the parcel shelf catches on the 2 rear seatbelts every time you open or close it and it very difficult to remove without scraping the plastic.
