Hyundai i20 Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Well equipped, even if you choose the entry-level car	Patchy standard of interior finish
Easy-to-use touchscreen infotainment	Not the cheapest to buy
Solid reliability and a long warranty	Fuel economy is unspectacular

Quick Summary

The Hyundai i20 is a sensible, practical small car that has evolved into a genuinely compelling proposition. This latest generation offers impressive equipment levels across the range, with even the entry-level model featuring a 10.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that ranks among the best in its class. The five-door layout provides plenty of head and legroom for rear passengers, whilst the 352-litre boot matches the VW Polo for practicality. With a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty and solid build quality, the i20 delivers reassurance and grown-up refinement, particularly on motorway journeys.

Recent revisions to the range have made the i20 significantly more affordable, erasing its previous pricing disadvantage against rivals like the Renault Clio, Vauxhall Corsa and Seat Ibiza. The 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine is willing and efficient, achieving around 45mpg in real-world driving. Whilst fuel economy is unspectacular compared to some rivals, and the interior finish feels slightly patchy in places, the i20 represents excellent value for money. The discontinued 201bhp i20N hot hatch remains available on the second-hand market for those seeking more thrills.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a well-equipped, reliable small car with excellent warranty coverage, families requiring practical space, and those who value intuitive infotainment technology.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising the finest interior quality, those seeking the lowest fuel consumption, or drivers wanting the cheapest entry price into the supermini class.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the i20 if: You're seeking a well-equipped, reliable small car with excellent warranty coverage, require practical space for families or commuters, or value intuitive infotainment technology.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium interior quality, require the lowest fuel consumption, or need the cheapest entry price into the supermini class.

Competitive Position: The Hyundai i20 is a strong contender in the supermini market, offering exceptional value for money with generous equipment levels and a comprehensive warranty. Whilst the VW Polo sets the standard for interior quality and the Toyota Yaris delivers superior fuel economy and reliability credentials, the i20 punches above its weight with class-leading infotainment and solid all-round practicality. The Renault Clio offers comparable pricing and style, but the i20's warranty and equipment advantage make it a compelling choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking peace of mind and modern technology.
