Hyundai i20 Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Well equipped, even if you choose the entry-level car | Patchy standard of interior finish |
| Easy-to-use touchscreen infotainment | Not the cheapest to buy |
| Solid reliability and a long warranty | Fuel economy is unspectacular |
Quick Summary
The Hyundai i20 is a well-equipped and spacious supermini that delivers a grown-up driving experience, even on motorways. Its standout feature is the excellent touchscreen infotainment system, which ranks among the best in its class. The car offers plenty of head and legroom, a practical 352-litre boot, and comes with a reassuring five-year unlimited mileage warranty including breakdown cover. The 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine provides adequate performance with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, achieving around 45mpg in real-world driving.
However, the i20's main drawback is its pricing. Even the entry-level model costs significantly more than rivals like the Renault Clio and Volkswagen Polo, whilst offering no clear performance or efficiency advantage. The interior finish feels patchy in places, with some hard plastics that don't match the quality of competitors. Fuel economy is unspectacular compared to rivals, and the removal of hybrid technology hasn't brought prices down sufficiently. For budget-conscious buyers seeking genuine value, the i20 struggles to justify its premium positioning in the supermini class.
Best for: Buyers prioritising equipment and technology, those valuing Hyundai's warranty and reliability reputation, and drivers seeking a spacious, comfortable supermini for motorway journeys.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious shoppers, those seeking the best fuel economy, buyers wanting premium interior quality, or drivers looking for the keenest pricing in the supermini segment.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hyundai i20 | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 29.7% | 4.3/5 |
| Volkswagen Polo | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 32.6% | 4.5/5 |
| Renault Clio | 3/5 | 4.3/5 | 31.6% | 4.3/5 |
| Toyota Yaris | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.6% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the i20 if: You prioritise equipment and technology, value Hyundai's warranty and reliability reputation, or seek a spacious, comfortable supermini for motorway journeys.
Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious, seeking the best fuel economy, wanting premium interior quality, or looking for the keenest pricing in the supermini segment.
Competitive Position: The Hyundai i20 is a very fine small car that delivers spaciousness, grown-up refinement, and excellent infotainment. However, it struggles to justify its premium pricing against rivals. The Volkswagen Polo and Toyota Yaris both offer superior expert and user ratings, whilst the Renault Clio provides comparable performance at a lower price point. The i20's strength lies in its warranty, equipment levels, and technology, but these advantages don't fully offset its higher cost and unspectacular fuel economy. For value-conscious buyers, rivals offer better propositions.

5 Overall rating
(6 reviews)Great to drive, nippy but solid, easy connectivity to phone etc
I know that it is known as quite boxy especially inside but the 2010 version rather than the 2009 seemed well thought through and it looked great for its value on the outside. Such a reliable vehicle but I needed to have taken a bit more care over the bumps etc.
A very good alternative to Fiesta or Polo and a lot cheaper than the Volkswagon.
Comfort and nice body excellence colour Months of wallanty fabulous.
Small family car but big enough for 4 adults comfortably 35pounds tax very good on petrol and cheaper to insure
