Hyundai i20 Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Well equipped, even if you choose the entry-level car | Patchy standard of interior finish |
| Easy-to-use touchscreen infotainment | Not the cheapest to buy |
| Solid reliability and a long warranty | Fuel economy is unspectacular |
Quick Summary
The Hyundai i20 has evolved into a distinctive and well-equipped supermini, moving beyond its previously unremarkable predecessors. While no longer a budget option, it offers sharp exterior lines and a generous five-year unlimited mileage warranty. Practicality is a strong suit, with ample interior space for four adults and a respectable 352-litre boot. The sole 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine (99bhp) is willing and efficient, making it a capable performer both around town and on motorways, despite ride and handling not being class-leading.
A major highlight is the standard 10.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, considered one of the best in its class, featuring sat-nav, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Equipment levels are impressive, even on entry-level models. However, the i20's main drawback is its relatively high price compared to rivals, and its fuel economy, while decent at around 45 mpg, isn't class-leading. Despite these points, its strong residual values and comprehensive warranty make it a sensible choice, offering a grown-up feel and solid reliability.
Best for: Buyers seeking a well-equipped supermini with a great infotainment system and a long warranty, those needing a practical, comfortable car for longer journeys, and drivers who value reliability and strong residual values.
Not ideal for: Buyers on a strict budget, those prioritising class-leading fuel economy or the absolute finest interior material quality, or those seeking the most dynamic handling in the segment.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hyundai i20 | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 29.4% | 4.4/5 |
| Volkswagen Polo | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 34.0% | 4.5/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the i20 if: You're looking for a well-equipped, practical, and comfortable supermini with an excellent infotainment system and a long warranty, valuing reliability and strong residual values.
Consider alternatives if: You're on a tight budget, prioritise class-leading fuel economy or interior material quality, or seek the most dynamic handling in the segment.
Competitive Position: The Hyundai i20 is a strong contender in the supermini segment, offering impressive equipment levels, a best-in-class infotainment system, and a reassuring five-year warranty. While it excels in practicality, comfort, and reliability, its higher price point and average fuel economy mean it doesn't represent the same outright value as some rivals. It's a very capable and grown-up small car, best suited for those who prioritise features and long-term peace of mind over a lower initial cost or ultimate driving dynamics.

5 Overall rating
(6 reviews)Great to drive, nippy but solid, easy connectivity to phone etc
I know that it is known as quite boxy especially inside but the 2010 version rather than the 2009 seemed well thought through and it looked great for its value on the outside. Such a reliable vehicle but I needed to have taken a bit more care over the bumps etc.
A very good alternative to Fiesta or Polo and a lot cheaper than the Volkswagon.
Comfort and nice body excellence colour Months of wallanty fabulous.
Small family car but big enough for 4 adults comfortably 35pounds tax very good on petrol and cheaper to insure
