Hyundai i30 (2012-2017) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Roomy and practical, especially the estate | Not as much fun to drive as a Ford Focus |
| Long list of standard kit on most models | Entry-level diesel is a bit weedy |
| Economical diesel engines | No hot hatch version |
Quick Summary
The Hyundai i30 (2012-2017) is a mid-sized hatchback that served as a strong rival to established family cars like the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra. This second-generation model, launched in 2012, marked a significant step upmarket for Hyundai with a more attractive design and improved driving dynamics. It prioritises ease-of-use, comfort, and practicality, making it a stress-free choice for daily duties, though it may not offer the same driving excitement as some competitors. Estate (Tourer) and three-door versions were also available, providing versatility.
Inside, the i30 offers a well-built and spacious cabin with ample room for adults and a generous 378-litre boot in hatchback models. Engine options include capable 1.6-litre petrol and economical 1.6-litre CRDi diesel units, with a 2015 facelift bringing further refinements and an improved automatic gearbox option. Running costs are generally low, with many diesel variants offering excellent fuel economy and low Vehicle Excise Duty. With a five-star EuroNCAP rating and a good list of standard equipment, the i30 represents a very solid and sensible choice for families and commuters.
Best for: Families or commuters seeking a practical, well-equipped, and economical mid-sized hatchback, and those prioritising value for money and a long warranty.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising an exciting or sporty driving experience (like a Ford Focus), or those seeking the absolute finest interior materials and badge appeal.
