Hyundai i30 (2012-2017) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Roomy and practical, especially the estate | Not as much fun to drive as a Ford Focus |
| Long list of standard kit on most models | Entry-level diesel is a bit weedy |
| Economical diesel engines | No hot hatch version |
Quick Summary
The Hyundai i30 (2012-2017), the second generation of Hyundai's mid-sized hatchback, was a significant step up from its predecessor, offering a more eye-catching design and a push upmarket. Introduced in early 2012, it rivalled established family cars like the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra. Available as a five-door hatchback, Tourer estate, and later a three-door, it was praised for its practicality, value for money, and long warranty. While not as dynamic as some rivals, it provided assured handling, decent refinement, and a comfortable ride.
Inside, the i30 features a well-built, practical cabin with good space for passengers and a generous 378-litre boot (528 litres for the Tourer). A 2015 facelift brought subtle styling tweaks, equipment upgrades, and revised, more efficient engines, including a new 1.6-litre diesel and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Standard equipment was good across trims, and it earned a five-star EuroNCAP rating. Running costs are generally low, particularly for economical diesel models, with many qualifying for low or zero Vehicle Excise Duty.
Best for: Drivers seeking a practical, sensible, and value-for-money family hatchback or estate with a good warranty.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising an exciting driving experience (like a Ford Focus) or a truly premium interior feel, or those needing the very latest advanced driver aids.

Competitive Position: The Hyundai i30 (2012-2017) is a strong contender in the family hatchback segment, offering excellent practicality, value for money, and a strong warranty.
