Hyundai i30 (2018-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Roomy estate is the pick of three bodystyles	Most versions are unexciting to drive
Hugely exciting i30N hot hatch	The Fastback sacrifices rear headroom for style
Generous standard equipment	Interior could be better finished

Quick Summary

The Hyundai i30 (2018-present) is a handsome and well-equipped family hatchback that strikes an excellent balance between purchase and running costs. Available in three bodystyles—hatchback, estate, and Fastback—it offers something for everyone. The estate is particularly impressive, with a 602-litre boot that rivals larger competitors. All versions feature generous standard equipment, including air-conditioning, Bluetooth, and autonomous emergency braking on entry-level models. The 2020 facelift introduced a refreshed line-up with improved technology, including an excellent 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system that ranks among the best in its class.

Whilst the i30 isn't the most exciting family hatchback to drive, it's composed and capable, with a compliant suspension that prioritises comfort over thrills. Engine options are sensible rather than thrilling, with efficient 1.0- and 1.5-litre turbocharged petrols and a 1.6-litre diesel available. The standout exception is the brilliant i30N hot hatch, which rivals the VW Golf GTi for performance and engagement. Running costs are competitive, with good fuel economy, lower insurance groups than many rivals, and Hyundai's impressive five-year unlimited-mileage warranty providing excellent peace of mind.

Best for: Budget-conscious families seeking a practical, well-equipped hatchback with low running costs, those wanting a spacious estate option, and performance enthusiasts considering the i30N hot hatch.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising engaging handling dynamics, those seeking a premium interior finish, or buyers wanting a plug-in hybrid option.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the i30 if: You're seeking a practical, well-equipped family hatchback with low running costs, want a spacious estate option, or are interested in the thrilling i30N hot hatch.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging handling dynamics, desire a premium interior finish, or require a plug-in hybrid option.

Competitive Position: The Hyundai i30 (2018-present) is a strong contender in the family hatchback market, offering excellent value and practicality. Whilst the VW Golf commands a premium for its badge appeal and the Ford Focus excels in handling dynamics, the i30 delivers more equipment and lower running costs. The Toyota Corolla matches it for reliability and user satisfaction. The i30's real strength lies in its versatility—the estate bodystyle is particularly impressive—combined with generous standard kit and Hyundai's excellent warranty. For budget-conscious families, it represents outstanding value, though those seeking driving engagement may prefer the Focus or Golf.
