Hyundai ix20 (2010-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Low running costs	Bland to drive
Lots of standard equipment	No sliding rear doors
Solid reliability record	A Citroën C3 Picasso has more space

Quick Summary

The Hyundai ix20 (2010-2019) is a practical and spacious mini MPV that punches above its weight. Based on a supermini platform but with a taller body and clever packaging, it offers surprising interior space comparable to much larger vehicles. With a 440-litre boot expanding to 1,486 litres with the rear seats folded, it rivals the VW Golf for practicality. The driving position is excellent, with good visibility and comfortable seating for all occupants. A subtle facelift in 2015 kept the model fresh throughout its nine-year production run.

The ix20 offers four engine options: 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol units, plus 1.4 and 1.6 CRDi diesels. The 1.4 diesel is the most economical, achieving 65.7mpg, whilst the 1.6 diesel delivers 64.2mpg. Petrol engines return 50.4mpg (1.4) and 43.5mpg (1.6 automatic). Insurance groups range from 7 to 13, keeping premiums reasonable. Standard equipment is generous across all trims, with even entry-level models featuring air-conditioning, electric windows and remote central locking. The ix20 is not thrilling to drive, but it is comfortable, well-built, and offers excellent value as a used family car.

Best for: Families seeking practicality and space, budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising comfort and reliability over driving dynamics, and users wanting low running costs.

Not ideal for: Drivers seeking engaging handling, those wanting sliding rear doors, or buyers prioritising maximum interior space over all else.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the ix20 if: You're seeking a practical and spacious family car, prioritising comfort and reliability over driving dynamics, wanting low running costs, or looking for excellent value as a used purchase.

Consider alternatives if: You desire engaging handling, require sliding rear doors, or need maximum interior space above all other considerations.

Competitive Position: The Hyundai ix20 (2010-2019) is a strong contender in the used mini MPV market, offering exceptional practicality and space for its size. Whilst it may not match the Ford B-Max for driving enjoyment or the Citroën C3 Picasso for sheer interior volume, the ix20 combines solid build quality, generous standard equipment, and low running costs to create an excellent family proposition. Its reliability record and affordability make it a sensible choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking a dependable, spacious, and comfortable vehicle.
