Hyundai ix35 (2010-2015) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Lots of standard equipment | Not as fun to drive as a Skoda Yeti |
| Affordable to buy | Gruff diesel engines |
| Excellent safety by the standards of the time | Unsettled ride |
Quick Summary
The Hyundai ix35 (2010-2015) marked a significant step for Hyundai, showcasing its ability to produce well-designed, quality cars that could compete with established brands in the burgeoning SUV market. Replacing the Tucson, it offered a sculpted, rugged design and generous standard equipment across its trim levels. Its practicality shines with a large 591-litre boot (expandable to 1,436 litres) and clever underfloor storage, though rear passenger access and views for children are not its strongest points.
On the road, the ix35 provides confidence-inspiring handling and accurate steering, making it easy to manoeuvre. However, the trade-off is a firm ride, especially on larger wheels, which can feel unsettled over potholes. Engine choices were limited, with the 1.6-litre petrol often feeling strained; the 1.7-litre and 2.0-litre CRDi diesels are generally preferred for their better mid-range torque and economy, offering around 40-50mpg in real-world driving. Servicing is recommended annually or every 10,000 miles, with Hyundai offering fixed-price plans for older models.
Best for: Drivers on a budget looking for a well-equipped, practical, and robust family SUV, or buyers prioritising standard features and value over ultimate driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Those seeking a truly engaging driving experience or a soft, comfortable ride, buyers who need ample rear passenger space and easy access for children, or those who prefer petrol engines with strong performance.

The Verdict
You should buy the ix35 if: You're on a budget, seeking a well-equipped, practical, and robust family SUV, or prioritise standard features and value over ultimate driving dynamics.
Consider alternatives if: You seek an engaging driving experience, a soft ride, ample rear passenger space with easy access for children, or strong petrol engine performance.
Competitive Position: The Hyundai ix35 (2010-2015) was a pivotal model for Hyundai, demonstrating their capability to produce desirable and high-quality SUVs. It offers excellent value, generous standard equipment, and strong practicality, making it a robust and hassle-free family car on the used market. While it may not match rivals like the Skoda Yeti or Ford Kuga for driving dynamics and ride comfort, its affordability and comprehensive features make it a savvy choice for budget-conscious buyers looking for a distinctive SUV.

(12 reviews)Excellent value for money, lots of features and great performance
I have taken one of these for a test drive and as far Im concerned it ticks all the boxes that I require,Ive decided to wait until later on in the year to purchase one
The car has dents all over and fog lights gone, the car floor on the driver side is all gone, anly holes, very disappointing after dropping everything to go see the car with intention to buy. Very sad
Great looking car, The Hyundai in general is a great all rounder,i.e. a family car, a work horse and a luxury cruising car likened to the Vauxhall Moka which is a great comparison to the Hyundai
Gearbox made from chocolate other than that looks nice in the eye
