Hyundai ix35 (2010-2015) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Lots of standard equipment | Not as fun to drive as a Skoda Yeti |
| Affordable to buy | Gruff diesel engines |
| Excellent safety by the standards of the time | Unsettled ride |
Quick Summary
The Hyundai ix35 (2010-2015) is a practical and well-equipped family SUV that marked a significant step forward for Hyundai's reputation. Launched as a replacement for the Tucson, it offered attractive styling with sculpted lines rather than boxy design, combined with a spacious 591-litre boot (1,436 litres with rear seats folded). The cabin features modern design with metallic accents and blue backlighting, though materials lack some soft-touch qualities found in rivals. A 2013 facelift brought subtle exterior updates, restructured trim levels, and improved infotainment.
The ix35 excels in practicality with useful storage solutions, including underfloor compartments and shopping bag hooks. Driving dynamics are competent rather than exciting, with accurate steering and confidence-inspiring handling, though the firm ride can be unsettled on smaller wheels. Engine choices are limited: the 1.7-litre and 2.0-litre CRDi diesels are the standout performers, offering genuine mid-range torque and real-world fuel economy around 40mpg. Petrol options feel strained by the car's bulk. As a used buy, the ix35 represents excellent value, offering robust construction, generous equipment levels, and hassle-free family motoring at an affordable price.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical, well-equipped family SUV with excellent safety credentials and low running costs, particularly those preferring diesel engines.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising engaging handling dynamics, refined engines, or a smooth ride on larger wheel sizes, or those seeking the driving excitement of a Skoda Yeti.

The Verdict
You should buy the ix35 if: You're seeking an affordable, practical family SUV with generous standard equipment, excellent safety credentials, and low running costs, particularly if you prefer diesel engines.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging handling dynamics, refined engines, a smooth ride, or the driving excitement offered by rivals like the Skoda Yeti.
Competitive Position: The Hyundai ix35 (2010-2015) is a solid contender in the used compact SUV market, offering excellent value and practicality. Whilst it cannot match the Skoda Yeti for driving dynamics or the Nissan Qashqai for overall refinement, its affordability, generous equipment levels, and robust construction make it a sensible choice for budget-conscious families. The ix35 proved Hyundai could build desirable, quality cars beyond low price and warranty, establishing itself as a distinctive and hassle-free family SUV option that remains a savvy used buy today.
