Hyundai ix35 (2010-2015) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Lots of standard equipment	Not as fun to drive as a Skoda Yeti
Affordable to buy	Gruff diesel engines
Excellent safety by the standards of the time	Unsettled ride

Quick Summary

The Hyundai ix35 (2010-2015) was a breakout car for Hyundai, demonstrating that the Korean manufacturer could build desirable vehicles with eye-catching design and high quality that challenged mainstream brands. Launched in 2010 as a replacement for the Tucson, the ix35 targeted the burgeoning SUV family car market with sculpted styling that eschewed the boxy designs of many rivals. A 2013 facelift brought subtle exterior updates, restructured trim levels, and improved infotainment. The ix35 offers impressive practicality with 591 litres of boot space (1,436 litres with rear seats folded), plus useful underfloor storage and numerous cupholders. The high-set seating position provides excellent forward visibility, and a nearly flat rear floor accommodates middle-seat passengers comfortably.

Engine options were limited but well-chosen, with the 1.7-litre and 2.0-litre CRDi diesels proving most popular and responsive. The 1.7-litre diesel, producing 113bhp with generous mid-range torque, delivered around 40mpg in real-world driving, whilst the more powerful 2.0-litre offered improved performance. Petrol options included a 1.6-litre GDi with stop/start technology achieving 44mpg. Steering is accurate and handling confidence-inspiring, though the firm ride can feel unsettled on smaller wheels over poor road surfaces. Refinement is respectable, with wind and road noise well suppressed. As a used buy, the ix35 represents excellent value, offering robust, practical, and comfortable family transport with generous standard equipment at an affordable price.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical, hassle-free family SUV with excellent standard equipment and low running costs, particularly those preferring diesel engines.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising engaging handling dynamics, refined petrol engines, or the most spacious rear cabin in the class.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the ix35 if: You're seeking an affordable, practical family SUV with excellent standard equipment, low running costs, and hassle-free ownership, particularly if you prefer diesel engines.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging handling dynamics, refined petrol engines, or the most spacious rear cabin in the class.

Competitive Position: The Hyundai ix35 (2010-2015) is a strong contender in the used compact SUV market, offering excellent value and practicality. Whilst it cannot match the Skoda Yeti for driving dynamics or the Nissan Qashqai for overall refinement, the ix35 delivers robust, comfortable family transport with generous standard equipment at an affordable price point. Its diesel engines are responsive and economical, making it a sensible choice for budget-conscious buyers. The ix35 represents a savvy purchase for those prioritising practicality and value over premium handling or cutting-edge technology.
