Hyundai ix35 (2010-2015) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Lots of standard equipment | Not as fun to drive as a Skoda Yeti |
| Affordable to buy | Gruff diesel engines |
| Excellent safety by the standards of the time | Unsettled ride |
Quick Summary
When introduced in 2010, the Hyundai ix35 played a significant role in establishing the Korean brand's reputation for well-built, well-engineered, and well-designed cars. Aimed at the burgeoning SUV market alongside rivals like the Nissan Qashqai, Ford Kuga, and Skoda Yeti, its sculpted, rugged styling set it apart from boxier competitors. It replaced the long-serving Tucson and was facelifted in 2013, refining its appeal. Practicality is a strong suit, offering 591 litres of boot space (1,436 litres with seats folded) and clever underfloor storage. Early models were lavishly equipped, offering excellent value with features like heated seats even on base trims.
On the road, the ix35 demonstrated Hyundai's progress, with accurate steering and confidence-inspiring handling, though the ride can be firm, especially on larger wheels. Engine choices were limited; the 1.6-litre petrol felt strained, making the 1.7-litre and 2.0-litre CRDi diesel units the more responsive and economical options, achieving around 40-53mpg in real-world driving. Running costs are reasonable, and servicing is recommended annually or every 10,000 miles. Overall, the ix35 is a robust, practical, and comfortable family SUV that offers substantial savings and high levels of standard equipment in the used market.
Best for: Drivers on a budget, those seeking a well-equipped, practical, and reliable family SUV, and buyers looking for excellent value in the used market.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising dynamic driving enjoyment, a very soft ride, or demanding the quietest engines under heavy load.

The Verdict
You should buy the ix35 if: You're on a budget, seeking a well-equipped, practical, and reliable family SUV, or looking for excellent value in the used market.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise dynamic driving enjoyment, a very soft ride, or demand the quietest engines under heavy load.
Competitive Position: The Hyundai ix35 (2010-2015) was a pivotal model for Hyundai, showcasing its capability to produce well-designed, high-quality, and richly equipped cars that offered significant value. While it may not match rivals like the Skoda Yeti for driving dynamics or the Ford Kuga for refinement in all aspects, its robust build, practicality, comfort, and generous standard features make it a highly attractive and sensible choice in the used SUV market, especially for budget-conscious families.

4.4 Overall rating
(12 reviews)Excellent value for money, lots of features and great performance
I have taken one of these for a test drive and as far Im concerned it ticks all the boxes that I require,Ive decided to wait until later on in the year to purchase one
The car has dents all over and fog lights gone, the car floor on the driver side is all gone, anly holes, very disappointing after dropping everything to go see the car with intention to buy. Very sad
Great looking car, The Hyundai in general is a great all rounder,i.e. a family car, a work horse and a luxury cruising car likened to the Vauxhall Moka which is a great comparison to the Hyundai
Gearbox made from chocolate other than that looks nice in the eye
