The Isuzu is very reliable but it tends to have steering and suspension problems with age. Comparable pickups are the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.

It’s the ideal compromise for me between farming and construction delivering comfort and power for towing. The only thing I don’t like is the fact I have to disable the lane support every time I start.

Isuzu D-Max (2021-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| A truly capable workhorse | The single-cab Utility model has a lower towing limit than the rest of the range |
| Plenty of creature comforts for lifestyle customers | Expect high fuel bills compared with an SUV's |
| Excellent safety rating | Expensive to insure |
Quick Summary
The Isuzu D-Max (2021-present) is a third-generation pickup truck that has benefited from a dwindling market, as competitors like the Volkswagen Amarok, Mercedes-Benz X-Class, and Mitsubishi L200 have withdrawn from the UK. This generation represents a significant step forward, offering improved comfort and car-like qualities whilst maintaining genuine workhorse capability. Available in three body styles—single cab, extended cab, and double cab—it caters to both commercial users and lifestyle customers. The cabin features soft-touch plastics, snug seats with extensive adjustment, and touchscreen infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on higher trims.
Powered by a 1.9-litre diesel engine producing 162bhp, the D-Max delivers decent low-down torque and is available with manual or automatic gearboxes. It drives remarkably well for a truck, with impressive agility, well-weighted steering, and a comfortable ride. All models except the entry-level Utility feature four-wheel drive with low-range capability, hill descent control, and 800mm wading depth. Most versions offer a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, whilst fuel economy ranges from 30.7 to 33.6mpg officially. Vehicle Excise Duty is fixed at £265 annually, with attractive benefit-in-kind rates for company vehicles. Running costs are reasonable, though insurance sits in the maximum group 50D and fuel consumption is higher than SUVs.
Best for: Commercial users seeking a capable workhorse, lifestyle customers wanting a practical family vehicle with weekend versatility, and those requiring genuine off-road ability with modern comforts.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising fuel economy over capability, those seeking lower insurance premiums, or single-cab users needing maximum towing capacity.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Isuzu D-Max | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 52.8% | 4.3/5 |

| Ford Ranger | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 34.0% | 4.3/5 |
| Mitsubishi L200 | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 64.0% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the D-Max if: You're a commercial user seeking a capable workhorse, a lifestyle customer wanting practical family versatility, or require genuine off-road ability with modern comforts.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise fuel economy over capability, seek lower insurance premiums, or need maximum towing capacity in a single-cab configuration.
Competitive Position: The Isuzu D-Max (2021-present) occupies a strong position in the pickup market, offering excellent value and capability at a competitive price point. Whilst the Toyota Hilux commands a higher percentage of good deals and retains value better, the D-Max delivers superior creature comforts and modern technology. It outperforms the Ford Ranger in user satisfaction and value proposition, and offers comparable overall ratings to both rivals. With a dwindling field of competitors and genuine improvements over its predecessor, the D-Max represents a highly sensible choice for those seeking a modern, capable, and well-equipped pickup truck.
