Isuzu D-Max (2021-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| A truly capable workhorse | The single-cab Utility model has a lower towing limit than the rest of the range |
| Plenty of creature comforts for lifestyle customers | Expect high fuel bills compared with an SUV's |
| Excellent safety rating | Expensive to insure |
Quick Summary
The Isuzu D-Max (2021-present) is a highly capable pickup truck that has become a key player in a UK market with fewer competitors. It successfully bridges the gap between a utilitarian tool and a car-like lifestyle vehicle, thanks to favourable tax rates. Available in Single, Extended, and Double Cab body styles, it offers a range of load bed sizes to suit different needs. The aggressive exterior styling is complemented by a more comfortable and well-equipped interior on higher-spec models, which could almost pass for an SUV at a glance.
All models are powered by a 162bhp 1.9-litre diesel engine, which provides ample low-down grunt for heavy work but lacks the refinement of a modern SUV. For a truck, it drives well, with impressive agility and a well-weighted steering feel. Its off-road credentials are a major strength, featuring selectable four-wheel drive and an 800mm wading depth. Most versions boast a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, and the trim levels range from the basic 'Utility' workhorse to the luxurious 'V-Cross', ensuring there is a D-Max for almost any purpose.
Best for: Commercial users needing a tough workhorse, lifestyle buyers seeking pickup utility with car-like features, and anyone requiring serious towing and off-road capability.
Not ideal for: Buyers who prioritise the refinement and fuel economy of an SUV, or those on a tight budget for insurance due to its high group 50 rating.

The Verdict
You should buy the D-Max if: You need a tough, capable workhorse for commercial use, or a versatile lifestyle pickup with strong off-road credentials and favourable tax benefits.
Consider alternatives if: Your priority is car-like refinement and running costs, or if the high insurance group rating is a significant concern.
Competitive Position: The Isuzu D-Max (2021-present) is a standout contender in the modern pickup market, successfully balancing work-ready toughness with lifestyle comforts. It competes strongly against established rivals like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux by offering a comprehensive package of capability, safety, and value across a wide range of trim levels, making it a very worthy choice for a broad spectrum of buyers.

4.9 Overall rating
(6 reviews)It’s the ideal compromise for me between farming and construction delivering comfort and power for towing. The only thing I don’t like is the fact I have to disable the lane support every time I start.
The Isuzu is very reliable but it tends to have steering and suspension problems with age. Comparable pickups are the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.
Its reliable and sturdy and has good resale value.
Base model but does what it Says on the tin, real work horse with few frills. Great towing ability.
Fantastic car go anywhere reliability and comfort guaranteed
