The Jaguar XE is probably the best handling car I've driven so far. The styling of the face-lift 2019 version is one of the best looking cars in it's class. Would have loved the camera in the rearview mirror, amazing feature. Would compare this car to a BMW 3, Merc C class. The more I drive this car the more I love it!!

Fantastic looking car with excellent handling characteristics and a superb petrol engine. It feels noticeably more special than its German rivals on the road, and if got with the InControl Pro 10 inch touch screen (and its assorted connectivity feature set) it can give them a run for their money in electronic tech. This year is towards the end of the model line for the gear selector rising out of the centre console once the engine is started, a fantastic feature that adds nothing to driving but contributes brilliantly to the sheer theatricality of the car.

It was a very fine looking, well specced example and seemed to be in excellent condition. The main reason for testing it was to see if it deserved its reputation for a smooth ride and general refinement. Whilst not actually uncomfortable, I was surprised at how stiff and unsettled the ride was, and how quickly I noticed the level of road noise. It was specified as a SPORT model, but I had been told by a dealer that that was about trim, and not any especially firmer suspension than a normal Jag XE . So overall very nice, but nowhere near as specially refined as I had been led to believe.

Jaguar XE (2015-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Brilliant handling | Electrical issues blight the Jag's reliability record |
| Sleek and sporting looks | Tight rear-seat space |
| Excellent eight-speed automatic gearbox | Small boot |
Quick Summary
The Jaguar XE (2015-2024) is Jaguar's stylish and innovative entry into the compact executive saloon market, competing directly with the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Constructed from bonded and riveted aluminium components, the XE features Jaguar's own Ingenium diesel and petrol engines, alongside comprehensive electronic driver assistance and convenience features. Its sleek, sporty design and exceptional handling make it a refreshing alternative to German rivals, though early models were plagued by electrical issues that have largely been resolved in later examples.
The XE strikes an excellent balance between comfort and nimbleness, making it ideal for long-distance driving with its refined ride and minimal wind and road noise. Jaguar's turbodiesel engines deliver impressive fuel economy, with the 161bhp unit achieving mid-60s mpg in real-world driving, whilst the more powerful 178bhp variant manages around 41mpg even when driven hard. Available with rear-wheel or four-wheel drive and manual or automatic transmissions, the XE offers generous standard equipment including leather seats, dual-zone climate control, and advanced safety features. However, practicality is sacrificed for style, with a tight rear-seat space and the smallest boot in its class at 410 litres.
Best for: Drivers seeking a stylish, engaging compact executive saloon with excellent handling, those prioritising driving dynamics over rear-seat space, and buyers wanting a refreshing alternative to German competitors.
Not ideal for: Families requiring spacious rear seating or large boot capacity, those concerned about early electrical reliability issues, or buyers needing an estate option.

| Mercedes-Benz C-Class | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 32.5% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the XE if: You're seeking a stylish, engaging compact executive saloon with excellent handling, prioritising driving dynamics over rear-seat space, or wanting a refreshing alternative to German competitors.
Consider alternatives if: You require spacious rear seating or large boot capacity, are concerned about early electrical reliability issues, or need an estate option.
Competitive Position: The Jaguar XE (2015-2024) is a compelling contender in the compact executive saloon segment, offering distinctive styling and superb handling that rivals the BMW 3 Series. Whilst the BMW edges ahead on expert ratings and the Audi A4 excels in user satisfaction, the XE provides excellent value with strong reliability in later models. Its Ingenium engines deliver impressive fuel economy and low running costs, making it an attractive proposition for drivers prioritising engagement and style over practicality. The XE represents a refreshing, characterful alternative to the usual German suspects, particularly for those willing to overlook its spatial limitations.
