Jaguar XE (2015-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Brilliant handling | Electrical issues blight the Jag's reliability record |
| Sleek and sporting looks | Tight rear-seat space |
| Excellent eight-speed automatic gearbox | Small boot |
Quick Summary
The Jaguar XE (2015-2024) was the British brand's stylish entry into the compact executive saloon market, designed to challenge the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, and Mercedes C-Class. Built on an innovative aluminium platform, it prioritises a premium feel and head-turning looks. However, this focus on style comes at the cost of practicality; its sleek, sloping roofline limits rear headroom, and the 410-litre boot is notably smaller than its key German rivals. Unlike competitors, Jaguar never offered a more practical estate version of the XE.
On the road, the XE shines with a superb balance of ride comfort and agile handling, making it a delight for enthusiastic drivers yet comfortable on long journeys. The Ingenium diesel engines are strong and frugal, though can be gruffer than those in rivals, while petrol options are smoother. Equipment levels are generous even on entry-level models, with post-2019 cars benefiting from an updated infotainment system. While early models had some reliability concerns, the XE offers a compelling and engaging alternative to the mainstream choices in its class.
Best for: Drivers who prioritise style and an engaging driving experience over outright practicality, and those looking for a stylish alternative to the German compact executive saloons.
Not ideal for: Buyers needing maximum rear passenger space or a large boot, those who want the practicality of an estate model, or anyone for whom reliability is the absolute top priority.

| Jaguar XE | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 29.9% | 4.2/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the XE if: You prioritise an engaging driving experience and distinctive style, and want a refreshing alternative to the usual German suspects.
Consider alternatives if: You need a large boot, spacious rear seats, or the option of an estate body style. Reliability is your absolute top priority.
Competitive Position: The Jaguar XE is a strong contender in the used compact executive class, offering a superb driving experience and head-turning looks that set it apart. While it compromises on practicality with a smaller boot and tighter rear space compared to rivals like the BMW 3 Series, its blend of comfort, agility, and efficient diesel engines makes it a compelling choice for enthusiastic drivers. It represents a stylish and sporty alternative, though buyers should check the history of earlier examples for electrical issues.

(25 reviews)Lovely car too drive and classy with just the right amount too power to give you the edge lovely sounding engine, steering is responsive whilst firm and sticks too cornering like tar all round great drive
The car was everything....and more....that I expected. Very pleased indeed!
Fantastic looking car with excellent handling characteristics and a superb petrol engine. It feels noticeably more special than its German rivals on the road, and if got with the InControl Pro 10 inch touch screen (and its assorted connectivity feature set) it can give them a run for their money in electronic tech. This year is towards the end of the model line for the gear selector rising out of the centre console once the engine is started, a fantastic feature that adds nothing to driving but contributes brilliantly to the sheer theatricality of the car.
It was a very fine looking, well specced example and seemed to be in excellent condition. The main reason for testing it was to see if it deserved its reputation for a smooth ride and general refinement. Whilst not actually uncomfortable, I was surprised at how stiff and unsettled the ride was, and how quickly I noticed the level of road noise. It was specified as a SPORT model, but I had been told by a dealer that that was about trim, and not any especially firmer suspension than a normal Jag XE . So overall very nice, but nowhere near as specially refined as I had been led to believe.
Ride and handling best in class ,performance more than adequate for normal road driving
