Jaguar XF (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| One of the best executive saloons to drive | No hybrid model |
| Well equipped | Iffy reliability record |
| A more unusual alternative to its German rivals | Models with sports suspension have a crashy ride |
Quick Summary
The Jaguar XF (2016-present), codenamed X260, is a large executive car designed to rival the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, and Mercedes E-Class. Available as a four-door saloon or a five-door Sportbrake estate, it offers ample passenger space, with the saloon boasting a 540-litre boot and the Sportbrake expanding to 1,700 litres with seats folded. While its interior styling is good, it doesn't quite match rivals for outright material quality or infotainment system intuitiveness.
Known for its sharp, direct handling, the XF offers a choice of petrol and diesel engines, including an efficient 2.0-litre D200 MHEV diesel from 2021. However, there's no plug-in hybrid or electric option. Running costs are competitive for diesel models, but resale values aren't as strong as German rivals, making it an attractive used purchase. All trim levels are well-equipped, with S, SE, and HSE options post-2021 facelift, offering features like an 11.4-inch touchscreen, adaptive cruise control, and a Meridian sound system on higher trims.
Best for: Drivers who prioritise an engaging driving experience and a stylish, less common alternative to German executive cars, seeking good practicality and well-equipped trims.
Not ideal for: Buyers requiring a hybrid or electric option, those who demand the highest interior material quality or most intuitive infotainment, or those concerned about Jaguar's reliability record.

The Verdict
You should buy the XF if: You're looking for a stylish executive car that's great to drive, offers good practicality, and stands out from the crowd of German rivals, especially as a used purchase.
Consider alternatives if: You require a hybrid or electric powertrain, prioritise ultimate interior quality and infotainment, or are concerned about long-term reliability.
Competitive Position: The Jaguar XF (2016-present) offers a compelling alternative in the executive car segment, excelling in driving dynamics and distinctive styling compared to its German rivals. While it may not lead in interior material quality, infotainment intuitiveness, or offer hybrid options, its strong used value and well-equipped trims make it an attractive choice for those seeking a characterful and engaging premium saloon or estate.

4.6 Overall rating
(80 reviews)High spec , extremely comfortable, everything is where you would expect it to be, and it just reeks of class. Lots of goodies for the tech fans but all straight forward so no problem for those of us less genned up. Why oh why did it take Jaguar so long to see the market for estate cars?
only 51k looks and drives like a dream brought my mechanic friend along and he could not find a single thing wrong with it.. he was amazed as he always does one happy bunny
Portfolio model is top spec, go for one with options like motion sensor boot opening and Meridian sound sysyem
Great value, comfortable car. Economical and a pleasure to drive.
Tremendous car, correctly described and correctly priced. Great way to find a replacement car
