High spec , extremely comfortable, everything is where you would expect it to be, and it just reeks of class. Lots of goodies for the tech fans but all straight forward so no problem for those of us less genned up. Why oh why did it take Jaguar so long to see the market for estate cars?

Jaguar XF (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| One of the best executive saloons to drive | No hybrid model |
| Well equipped | Iffy reliability record |
| A more unusual alternative to its German rivals | Models with sports suspension have a crashy ride |
Quick Summary
The Jaguar XF (2016-present) is a stylish large executive saloon that rivals the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. This second-generation model, introduced in 2015 and facelifted in 2021, offers impressive handling and sharp, direct steering that makes it one of the finest executive cars to drive. Available as a four-door saloon or five-door Sportbrake estate with rear- or all-wheel drive, the XF combines sleek design with practical interior space. The saloon features a 540-litre boot, whilst the Sportbrake offers 1,700 litres with rear seats folded, surpassing some German competitors.
The XF comes with a range of petrol and diesel engines paired with eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual gearboxes. The mid-level 2.0-litre diesel with 180hp offers the best balance of performance and economy, whilst the 2021 facelift introduced the D200 MHEV with mild hybrid technology. Petrol options include 200hp, 250hp, and 300hp variants. All trim levels are well-equipped, with the SE specification offering excellent value. However, the lack of a plug-in hybrid or electric option, combined with Jaguar's less-than-perfect reliability record, may deter some buyers. Resale values are lower than German rivals, making it an attractive used purchase for those seeking style and driving engagement.
Best for: Drivers prioritising engaging handling and style, those seeking an alternative to mainstream German executive cars, and buyers wanting excellent practicality in a saloon or estate format.
Not ideal for: Those requiring hybrid or electric powertrains, buyers concerned about reliability, or those seeking the lowest running costs in the executive segment.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jaguar XF | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 34.0% | 4.4/5 |

| Mercedes-Benz E-Class | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.6% | 4.5/5 |
| Audi A6 | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 33.9% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the XF if: You prioritise engaging handling and style, seek an alternative to mainstream German executive cars, or want excellent practicality in a saloon or estate format.
Consider alternatives if: You require hybrid or electric powertrains, are concerned about reliability, or seek the lowest running costs in the executive segment.
Competitive Position: The Jaguar XF (2016-present) is a compelling choice in the executive saloon market, offering exceptional driving dynamics that rival or exceed its German competitors. Whilst the BMW 5 Series edges ahead on expert rating and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class scores higher with users, the XF delivers superior value as a used purchase due to lower depreciation. Its combination of stylish design, engaging handling, practical space, and well-equipped interiors makes it an excellent alternative for those seeking something different from the established German trio. The lack of hybrid options and reliability concerns are notable drawbacks, but for drivers prioritising driving pleasure and exclusivity, the XF represents outstanding value in the used executive car market.
