Jaguar XF (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| One of the best executive saloons to drive | No hybrid model |
| Well equipped | Iffy reliability record |
| A more unusual alternative to its German rivals | Models with sports suspension have a crashy ride |
Quick Summary
The Jaguar XF (2016-present) is a stylish large executive saloon that rivals the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Available as a four-door saloon or five-door Sportbrake estate, it offers impressive practicality with a 540-litre boot in the saloon and 1,700 litres in the estate. The second-generation model, introduced in 2015 and facelifted in 2021, combines sleek design with sharp, direct handling and a well-appointed interior, though materials don't quite match the German competition and the infotainment system is less intuitive.
The XF excels in driving dynamics with three suspension options, including adaptive systems on higher trims. Diesel engines, particularly the 2.0-litre 180hp model, offer the best balance of performance and economy, achieving around 50mpg. Petrol options range from 200hp to 300hp, with the 200hp version providing sufficient power for most drivers. The 2021 facelift introduced the D200 MHEV mild hybrid diesel and simplified trim levels to S, SE, and HSE. Running costs are reasonable for the class, though resale values lag behind German rivals. The lack of a plug-in hybrid or electric option may deter some buyers, and Jaguar's reliability record is less impressive than competitors.
Best for: Drivers seeking a stylish, engaging executive saloon with excellent handling, those wanting a more exclusive alternative to German brands, and buyers prioritising practicality and driving enjoyment.
Not ideal for: Those requiring hybrid or electric powertrains, buyers concerned about long-term reliability, or those seeking the softest ride quality in the executive class.

The Verdict
You should buy the XF if: You seek a stylish, engaging executive saloon with excellent handling, want a more exclusive alternative to German brands, or prioritise practicality and driving enjoyment.
Consider alternatives if: You require hybrid or electric powertrains, are concerned about long-term reliability, or seek the softest ride quality in the executive class.
Competitive Position: The Jaguar XF (2016-present) is a compelling choice in the executive saloon market, offering superior driving dynamics and distinctive styling compared to its German rivals. Whilst the BMW 5 Series edges ahead on expert ratings and the Audi A6 scores highest with users, the XF delivers excellent value as a used buy, with lower prices reflecting depreciation rather than inferior quality. It's an ideal choice for those prioritising engagement and exclusivity over badge prestige, combining practicality, technology, and driving pleasure in a package that stands apart from the conventional German executive trio.

What people say
High spec , extremely comfortable, everything is where you would expect it to be, and it just reeks of class. Lots of goodies for the tech fans but all straight forward so no problem for those of us less genned up. Why oh why did it take Jaguar so long to see the market for estate cars?
I like everything about the car.the only thing that I didn't like about it is that it came without spare wheel
Great value for the age and options in and on the car, only thing missing is electric folding mirrors.
Excellent value, easy to drive, lovely interior, smooth and very, gadgets galore, very comfortable 😀 I've never had a car as fabulous as this one.
Great car, plenty of space and nice features. Big car inside and out so be aware does take getting used to driving around as it's nearly 5m long and nearly 2m wide. Beautifully picks up on speed and purrs like the Jaguar itself.
