High spec , extremely comfortable, everything is where you would expect it to be, and it just reeks of class. Lots of goodies for the tech fans but all straight forward so no problem for those of us less genned up. Why oh why did it take Jaguar so long to see the market for estate cars?

Jaguar XF (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| One of the best executive saloons to drive | No hybrid model |
| Well equipped | Iffy reliability record |
| A more unusual alternative to its German rivals | Models with sports suspension have a crashy ride |
Quick Summary
The Jaguar XF (2016-present) is a stylish large executive saloon that rivals the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. This second-generation model, introduced in 2015 and facelifted in 2021, offers impressive handling and a sleek design. Available as a four-door saloon or five-door Sportbrake estate with rear- or all-wheel drive, the XF delivers a sharp, direct driving experience with excellent passenger space. The 540-litre boot on the saloon exceeds rivals, whilst the Sportbrake provides 1,700 litres with rear seats folded. Interior styling is contemporary, though materials don't quite match the Audi A6's quality, and the infotainment system is less intuitive than German competitors.
Engine options include diesel and petrol variants, with the 2.0-litre 180hp diesel offering the best balance of performance and economy. The 2021 facelift introduced the D200 MHEV mild hybrid diesel with improved emissions. Petrol engines range from 200hp to 300hp, with the 250hp P250 offering sufficient power for most drivers. Running costs favour diesel models, achieving up to 50.9mpg, though resale values lag behind German rivals. All trim levels are well-equipped, with the SE trim offering excellent value. The lack of a plug-in hybrid or electric option may deter some buyers, and Jaguar's reliability record warrants consideration.
Best for: Drivers seeking a stylish, engaging executive saloon with excellent handling, those wanting a more exclusive alternative to German brands, and buyers prioritising driving dynamics over outright luxury.
Not ideal for: Those requiring hybrid or electric powertrains, buyers concerned about reliability, or those prioritising premium interior materials and intuitive infotainment systems.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jaguar XF | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 39.3% | 4.4/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz E-Class | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.5% | 4.5/5 |
| BMW 5 Series | 5/5 | 4.6/5 | 37.6% | 4.6/5 |
| Audi A6 | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 25.0% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the XF if: You seek a stylish, engaging executive saloon with excellent handling, want a more exclusive alternative to German brands, or prioritise driving dynamics over outright luxury.
Consider alternatives if: You require hybrid or electric powertrains, are concerned about reliability, or prioritise premium interior materials and intuitive infotainment systems.
Competitive Position: The Jaguar XF (2016-present) is a compelling choice in the executive saloon segment, offering superior driving dynamics and distinctive styling compared to its German rivals. Whilst the BMW 5 Series edges ahead on expert ratings and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class leads in user satisfaction, the XF delivers exceptional value with a higher percentage of good and great deals available. Its sharp handling, well-equipped cabins, and more exclusive appeal make it an excellent alternative for drivers prioritising engagement over traditional luxury. However, potential buyers should weigh the lack of hybrid options and reliability concerns against its dynamic driving experience and attractive used pricing.
