Jeep Compass (2017-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Better off-road than most rivals	No better than adequate to drive
Well equipped, so long as you steer clear of Sport spec	Some rivals are more fuel efficient
Strong safety rating from Euro NCAP	Most versions have low towing limits

Quick Summary

The Jeep Compass (2017-2020) is a compact SUV with distinctive bluff styling and genuine off-road capability through its Selec-Terrain four-wheel drive system. Whilst it offers a spacious, comfortable interior with good visibility and a high driving position, it provides merely adequate on-road performance. The 1.6 MultiJet 120 diesel is hushed but underpowered, whilst the 1.4 MultiAir 140 petrol offers little improvement. The ride is cushy with wallowy body movement, delivering an old-school American SUV character rather than the hatchback-like feel of more modern rivals.

Boot space of 438 litres is adequate but trails competitors like the Peugeot 3008 (520 litres) and Ford Kuga (475 litres). The interior, whilst well-equipped on Longitude trim and above, feels dated compared to rivals, with an infotainment system that lags behind the Kia Sportage and Seat Ateca. Fuel economy ranges from 35-40mpg depending on engine choice. Running costs are competitive, particularly on PCP finance with dealer contributions, and servicing deals are generous. However, there are significantly better alternatives available in this crowded segment.

Best for: Buyers seeking distinctive styling, genuine off-road capability, and comfortable, spacious family transport with competitive monthly finance costs.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising sharp handling, fuel efficiency, boot space, or modern interior design, or drivers requiring strong towing capacity.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Compass if: You value distinctive styling, genuine off-road capability, and comfortable family transport with competitive monthly finance costs.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sharp handling, fuel efficiency, boot space, modern interior design, or strong towing capacity.

Competitive Position: The Jeep Compass (2017-2020) occupies a unique position in the compact SUV market with its distinctive 'proper SUV' appeal and genuine off-road credentials. However, it is outclassed by rivals in most other respects. The Volkswagen Tiguan offers superior premium quality and refinement, the Nissan Qashqai provides better value and practicality, and the Ford Kuga delivers more space and efficiency. Whilst the Compass is inoffensive to drive and well-equipped on mid-range trims, it lacks the driving dynamics of the Seat Ateca, the efficiency of the Skoda Karoq, and the style of the Peugeot 3008. For most buyers, these alternatives represent significantly better choices, whether purchasing new or used.
