Decent car but a bit underachieving on the interior and prefer the Auto version. Good price fir the year and model

Punches well above its weight, solid quality abound. Responsive steering and a pleasure to drive- far exceeded expectations and turns heads like no other small suv.

Too many features and a handbook that is difficult to understand. On the plus side it drives nicely and is a bit different

Jeep Renegade (2014-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Capable of proper off-roading | Uninspired to drive on Tarmac |
| Roomy cabin | Reliability concerns |
| Eye-catching appearance | Disappointing score in Euro NCAP safety tests |
Quick Summary
The Jeep Renegade is the smallest vehicle in Jeep's UK line-up and a compact SUV that competes with the Fiat 500X, Renault Captur, Nissan Juke, and Mazda CX-3. Its distinctive chunky appearance immediately channels classic Jeep styling with its seven-slot grille and beefy stance, making it look capable of serious off-road adventures. Inside, there's plenty of headroom and decent space overall, though rear legroom is somewhat cramped and boot space is merely acceptable rather than exceptional. Some models offer a 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat and folding front passenger seat for added practicality.
On the road, the Renegade is best described as reasonable but uninspired. Steering feels artificial and distant, though the car remains solid and composed through corners. The ride can be slightly firm and bumpy, whilst road and wind noise could be better contained at motorway speeds. Engine options range from a 109bhp 1.6-litre petrol to a 2.0-litre diesel with 138bhp, with a 2018 facelift introducing a turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol and new 1.3-litre engines. The 1.6-litre petrol should be avoided due to insufficient power. Running costs are reasonable, with the 1.6-litre diesel achieving 47.1–50.4mpg and the 1.0-litre petrol managing 40.4–42.2mpg. Service intervals are fairly close, with major services costing around £400 at main dealers.
Best for: Buyers seeking distinctive styling and genuine off-road capability, those wanting a spacious cabin, and drivers who value eye-catching appearance over conventional driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising on-road driving enjoyment, buyers concerned about reliability, or those seeking the highest safety ratings, as Euro NCAP retesting in 2019 downgraded it to three stars.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jeep Renegade | 3/5 | 4.2/5 | 39.1% | 4.0/5 |
| Renault Captur | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 36.3% | 4.4/5 |
| Nissan Juke | 3/5 | 4.4/5 | 37.5% | 4.2/5 |
| Fiat 500X | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 37.6% | 4.1/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Renegade if: You value distinctive styling and genuine off-road capability, want a spacious cabin, or prioritise eye-catching appearance over conventional driving dynamics.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise on-road driving enjoyment, are concerned about reliability, or seek the highest safety ratings available in the compact SUV segment.
Competitive Position: The Jeep Renegade holds its own in the competitive compact SUV market, offering distinctive styling and genuine off-road capability that few rivals can match. However, it faces stiff competition from the Renault Captur, which scores higher on expert and overall ratings, and the Fiat 500X, which boasts exceptional user satisfaction. The Renegade's main weakness lies in its uninspired on-road dynamics, reliability concerns, and disappointing Euro NCAP safety rating. For buyers seeking style and off-road ability over driving refinement, it remains an appealing choice, but those prioritising safety and reliability should consider the Captur or Juke instead.
