Jeep Renegade (2014-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Capable of proper off-roading	Uninspired to drive on Tarmac
Roomy cabin	Reliability concerns
Eye-catching appearance	Disappointing score in Euro NCAP safety tests

Quick Summary

The Jeep Renegade is the smallest vehicle in Jeep's UK line-up and a compact SUV that competes with the Fiat 500X, Renault Captur, Nissan Juke, Mazda CX-3, Mini Countryman, Honda HR-V and Hyundai Kona. Its distinctive appearance immediately channels classic Jeep styling with its seven-slot grille and beefy stance, looking unapologetically American despite being made outside the USA. Inside, there's plenty of headroom and decent space, though rear legroom is cramped and boot space is merely acceptable. Some models offer a 40/20/40 split folding rear seat and folding front passenger seat for added practicality.

On the road, the Renegade is best described as reasonable, with solid and composed handling through corners, though steering feels artificial and distant. A 2018 facelift introduced new turbocharged and naturally aspirated petrol engines alongside updated diesel options, along with improved infotainment systems featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, Euro NCAP retesting in 2019 revealed serious safety concerns, scoring just three stars due to lacking modern active safety systems. Running costs vary by engine choice, with the 1.0-litre petrol achieving 40.4-42.2mpg and the 1.6-litre diesel reaching 47.1-50.4mpg. Service intervals occur every 9,000 miles for petrol and 15,000 miles for diesel engines.

Best for: Buyers seeking distinctive styling and genuine off-road capability, those prioritising cabin space, and drivers wanting an eye-catching compact SUV.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising on-road driving dynamics, buyers concerned about reliability and safety ratings, or drivers seeking a conventional, trouble-free ownership experience.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Renegade if: You seek distinctive styling and genuine off-road capability, prioritise cabin space, or want an eye-catching compact SUV that stands out from the crowd.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise on-road driving dynamics, are concerned about reliability and safety ratings, or seek a conventional, trouble-free ownership experience.

Competitive Position: The Jeep Renegade holds its own in the competitive compact SUV segment, offering distinctive styling and genuine off-road capability that rivals cannot match. However, its uninspired on-road dynamics, reliability concerns, and disappointing Euro NCAP safety rating place it behind competitors like the Renault Captur, which scores higher overall. The Nissan Juke and Fiat 500X offer better user ratings and comparable value. The Renegade appeals to a specific buyer seeking style and off-road potential over conventional practicality, making it a niche choice rather than an obvious recommendation.
