Kia Niro Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Very low running costs PHEV loses some boot space
Roomy for passengers Not exciting to drive
Lots of equipment as standard Styling won't be to all tastes

Quick Summary

The Kia Niro is a family-sized crossover SUV available as a full hybrid (HEV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV). It offers a practical and roomy interior, making it a great family car with good legroom and a 451-litre boot in the HEV model. Its confident, composed, and comfortable driving dynamics, coupled with light steering, make it well-suited for both city driving and motorway cruising. While the petrol engine can be noisy under hard acceleration, it's generally unobtrusive in most situations.

With competitive pricing, the Niro HEV achieves around 45-50mpg in real-world driving, while the PHEV offers over 30 miles of electric range, significantly reducing running costs if regularly charged. The car comes well-equipped across its three trims (Pure, Evolve, Aspire), featuring a 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Its smart and durable interior, combined with a comprehensive suite of safety features, makes it a highly recommendable and complete family car.

Best for: Families seeking a practical, roomy, and well-equipped crossover with hybrid powertrain options and low running costs. Buyers who value comfort and light steering over sporty driving dynamics.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising thrilling performance or exceptionally quiet engines under hard acceleration. Those who need maximum boot space in a PHEV variant. Buyers who dislike eye-catching or fussy styling.

The Verdict

You should buy the Niro if: You're a family seeking a practical, roomy, and well-equipped crossover with efficient hybrid options, or if you prioritise comfort and low running costs.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise thrilling performance, desire a larger boot in a plug-in hybrid, or prefer less distinctive styling.

Competitive Position: The Kia Niro is a strong contender in the crossover SUV market, offering a compelling blend of practicality, efficiency, and standard equipment. While its 1.6-litre petrol engine can be underwhelming under hard acceleration, its confident and comfortable driving dynamics, coupled with its spacious and smart interior, make it a highly recommendable family car. Its competitive pricing and choice of hybrid powertrains position it well against rivals like the Toyota C-HR and Hyundai Kona, especially for budget-conscious families.

This car is a very comfortable ride, very little noise whether its in ev or hev. Spec is very good on this model and is quite economical to run. My insurance did go up quite a lot though from having a Nissan Qashqai before.

Excellent motor to drive, especially when in sport mode. Unfortunately it was missing floor mats and the satnav sd card , but it has android auto. Its very comfortable. I cant compare it to any other hybrid because its the first hybrid Ive ever driven, but I would highly recommend this model.

200 miles driving so far. Love it. Comfortable, smooth, easy to drive. Still learning extra features, they seem very well thought out, once you get your head round how to use them., but easy to drive without them. Downsides: I don’t like the boot latch, lovely radio with endless choice, but I can’t figure how to store and select favourites. My friend with same model claims 50mpg. But so far I have 46mpg. I think I got a good deal comparatively, but all cars are too very very ridiculously expensive.
