Kia Soul EV (2020-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Good to drive | Boot is on the small side |
| Lots of standard equipment | Being EV-only means it's expensive to buy |
| Roomy for passengers | High insurance group |
Quick Summary
The Kia Soul EV (2020-2024) is the third generation of the Soul and the first to be offered exclusively with an electric powertrain. Aimed at young buyers seeking fashionable styling and electric power, it offers impressive range and equipment levels at competitive prices on the second-hand market. The Soul EV comes in two battery options: the 64kWh Explore model with 201bhp and 250 miles of real-world range, and the 39.2kWh Urban model with 134bhp and 171 miles of WLTP range. Both deliver smooth, progressive steering and a neutral chassis that instil confidence in town and on country roads alike.
Running costs are very low, with excellent efficiency and the ability to use off-peak charging tariffs via the free app. The Soul EV is packed with standard equipment, including a sharp 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated leather seats on higher trims, and semi-autonomous drive modes. Charging from a 7.4kW home wallbox takes less than 11 hours, whilst rapid DC charging delivers 80% charge in 45 minutes. The main drawback is the smaller-than-average boot at 315 litres, and higher insurance group placement. For budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical, well-equipped electric car with impressive range, the Soul EV represents excellent value.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical, well-equipped electric car with impressive range, young drivers attracted to distinctive styling, and those wanting low running costs and excellent equipment levels.
Not ideal for: Those requiring a large boot, buyers seeking the lowest insurance premiums, or those preferring conventional petrol or diesel powertrains.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kia Soul EV | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 27.9% | 4.3/5 |
| MG ZS EV | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 36.2% | 4.5/5 |

| VW ID.3 | 4/5 | N/A | 32.6% | 3.9/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Soul EV if: You're seeking a practical, well-equipped electric car with impressive range, attracted to distinctive styling, or looking for low running costs and excellent value on the second-hand market.
Consider alternatives if: You require a large boot, prioritise the lowest insurance premiums, or prefer conventional petrol or diesel powertrains.
Competitive Position: The Kia Soul EV is a fantastic all-round electric car that represents excellent value on the second-hand market. Whilst the MG ZS EV offers better value for money and the Peugeot e-2008 provides a larger boot, the Soul EV excels with its impressive range, smooth driving dynamics, and generous equipment levels. It outperforms the VW ID.3 in user satisfaction and overall appeal. For budget-conscious buyers seeking a well-equipped, practical electric vehicle with genuine range capability, the Soul EV is a highly competitive choice that delivers on both performance and practicality.
