Kia Sportage (2022-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Wide range of powertrains	Divisive styling
Superb infotainment	Ford Kuga is better to drive
Well equipped	Top-spec models are very pricey

Quick Summary

The Kia Sportage (2022-present) is the UK's best-selling SUV, accounting for around 40 per cent of all Kia registrations. The latest generation, updated in 2025, offers a well-judged balance of practicality, comfort, and technology. With boot capacity ranging from 587 to 591 litres depending on powertrain, generous interior storage, and impressive build quality, it delivers genuine family SUV credentials. The spacious cabin accommodates rear passengers comfortably, whilst the panoramic sunroof on top-spec models adds premium appeal without compromising headroom for those up to six feet tall.

Available with petrol, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid powertrains across three trim levels (Pure, GT-Line, and GT-Line S), the Sportage strikes an excellent balance between ride comfort and handling agility. The popular self-charging hybrid achieves 40-45mpg whilst delivering 235bhp and smooth automatic transmission. Standard equipment is generous across all specifications, featuring a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, LED headlights, parking sensors, and comprehensive safety systems. Kia's reassuring seven-year warranty and strong residual values make this an easy family SUV to recommend, though top-spec models approach £40,000 and incur premium vehicle excise duty.

Best for: Families seeking a practical, well-equipped SUV with modern technology, flexible powertrain options, and a seven-year warranty; buyers prioritising comfort and refinement over outright driving engagement.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising sharp handling dynamics (Ford Kuga offers more engagement), buyers with divisive taste in styling, or those seeking budget-friendly top-spec models without premium tax implications.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Sportage if: You're seeking a practical, well-equipped family SUV with modern technology, flexible powertrain options, and excellent build quality backed by a seven-year warranty.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sharp handling dynamics, have divisive taste in styling, or wish to avoid premium vehicle excise duty on top-spec models.

Competitive Position: The Kia Sportage stands as a strong all-rounder in the competitive family SUV market, offering superior expert ratings and excellent value with 35.5% good/great deals available. Whilst the Volkswagen Tiguan carries premium badge appeal and the Hyundai Tucson shares the same platform with eye-catching styling, the Sportage distinguishes itself through generous equipment levels, superb infotainment, and a wider powertrain range. The BYD Seal U offers impressive user ratings, but the Sportage's proven reliability, warranty coverage, and balanced driving dynamics make it an easy recommendation for families prioritising practicality and technology over outright driving engagement.
