This Car offers all the requirements for my family. Plenty of space for the growing children, plenty of space for all our ‘stuff’. Very safe and able to tow.

I would suggest you have to have some sort of need for a Discovery, I shoot. I understand that should you wish to make your whole life less meaningful and buy a caravan, they make excellent towing vehicles. They are an excellent mix of ruggedness and style, luxury and practicality, whilst being more ageless than more popular cars. Don’t buy one thinking you can run it for nothing, this is my second Discovery, they do absorb a fair bit of budget, only you can decide if the price is worth it.

Land Rover Discovery 4 (2009-2016) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Immensely capable off road | Lots of reliability worries |
| Superbly comfortable on tarmac | High running costs demand deep pockets |
| Roomy and practical seven-seat cabin | Not as sharp to drive as the equivalent Audi or BMW |
Quick Summary
The Land Rover Discovery 4 (2009-2016), affectionately known as the Disco 4, is a versatile seven-seat SUV equally at home at a top-end restaurant or loaded with family and pets on the motorway. It combines practicality, comfort, and off-road capability with understated affluence. The spacious interior features individual rear seats that fold independently, configurable boot space, and a split tailgate for easy loading. On the road, the Discovery 4 delivers a smooth, comfortable ride with controlled handling and excellent safety equipment, though it prioritises comfort over sporty dynamics compared to rivals like the BMW X5 or Audi Q7.
Running costs are substantial, with fuel consumption typically 25-30mpg and high emissions placing most models in the second-highest tax band. Servicing at franchised dealers is expensive, though pre-paid plans and independent specialists offer alternatives. Both the 2.7-litre and 3.0-litre diesel engines feature rubber timing belts requiring replacement every seven years or 105,000-112,000 miles—a costly job. Reliability is a significant concern; genuine reliable examples are increasingly rare. However, if you find a well-maintained example and budget for potential repairs and high running costs, the Discovery 4 offers unmatched practicality and capability for families needing seven seats and genuine off-road ability.
Best for: Families needing seven seats, those seeking a capable off-roader with on-road comfort, and buyers who value practicality and style over running costs.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising reliability, drivers seeking sporty handling, or anyone unwilling to commit to high fuel and tax bills.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Land Rover Discovery 4 | 4/5 | 4.9/5 | 32.5% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW X5 E70 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 33.1% | 4.2/5 |
| Volvo XC90 | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.2% | 4.3/5 |
| Toyota Land Cruiser | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 22.5% | 4.0/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Discovery 4 if: You need seven seats, want a capable off-roader with genuine on-road comfort, and value practicality and style over running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise reliability, seek sporty handling, are budget-conscious, or unwilling to commit to high fuel and tax bills.
Competitive Position: The Land Rover Discovery 4 stands out in the premium seven-seat SUV market for its unmatched practicality and off-road capability. Whilst the BMW X5 offers sharper driving dynamics and the Volvo XC90 provides Scandinavian refinement, the Discovery 4 delivers superior space and versatility. However, reliability concerns and high running costs set it apart negatively from rivals. The Toyota Land Cruiser offers better dependability but at a premium price. For families prioritising seven-seat practicality and off-road ability over cost efficiency, the Discovery 4 remains hard to beat—provided you find a well-maintained example and budget accordingly.
