Land Rover Discovery Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Roomy and practical seven-seat cabin	Poor reputation for reliability
Tremendous off-road ability	Not as exciting to drive as a BMW X5
Comfortable on long journeys	Less distinctive-looking than earlier generations

Quick Summary

The Land Rover Discovery is a world-class off-roader that has evolved into a world-class luxury family car. This fifth-generation model, introduced in 2017, combines genuine off-road prowess with premium refinement, offering a seven-seat cabin that is genuinely spacious and practical. With up to 2,391 litres of boot space, a 3,500kg towing capacity, and features like Terrain Response system, 285mm ground clearance and 900mm wading depth, the Discovery remains one of the most versatile family SUVs available. It strikes a sweet spot between the smaller Discovery Sport and the more rugged Defender.

The Discovery is comfortable and easy to drive, with a smooth ride suitable for both urban streets and motorway cruising. The 2021 facelift introduced the excellent D350 mild-hybrid diesel engine, delivering 345bhp and strong performance. Cabin quality is strong with an upright dashboard, high driving position and a mix of premium finishes. However, running costs are substantial, with servicing and maintenance being particularly expensive. The main concern is its poor reliability record, though if you're willing to accept this risk, the Discovery's class-leading practicality and off-road capability make it a compelling choice for families seeking a genuine go-anywhere luxury SUV.

Best for: Families needing a spacious seven-seat SUV with genuine off-road ability, those who value practicality and comfort on long journeys, and buyers seeking a luxury vehicle with real adventure credentials.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers concerned about running costs and reliability, those prioritising driving excitement over practicality, or buyers seeking a more distinctive modern design.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Discovery if: You need a spacious seven-seat SUV with genuine off-road ability, value practicality and comfort on long journeys, or seek a luxury vehicle with real adventure credentials.

Consider alternatives if: You are concerned about running costs and reliability, prioritise driving excitement over practicality, or require a more distinctive modern design.

Competitive Position: The Land Rover Discovery is a strong contender in the premium seven-seat SUV market, offering unmatched off-road capability and class-leading practicality. Whilst the BMW X5 scores higher on expert ratings and the Volvo XC90 excels in user satisfaction, the Discovery's genuine go-anywhere character and spacious interior make it unique. It is less on-road focused than rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLE, but this rugged authenticity defines its appeal. For buyers willing to accept higher running costs and reliability concerns, the Discovery delivers exceptional versatility and luxury that few competitors can match.
