Land Rover Discovery Sport (2014-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Extremely capable off road	Poor reliability record
Versatile and practical seven-seat cabin	Third row is best for children
Well judged ride and handling balance	The car's weight takes the edge off its performance

Quick Summary

The Land Rover Discovery Sport is a versatile premium compact SUV that stands out for offering optional seven-seat practicality, a feature rarely found in its class. Launched in 2014 as a replacement for the Freelander, it combines genuine off-road capability with a comfortable, well-appointed interior that has improved significantly over successive generations. The commanding driving position, spacious middle row, and flexible seating arrangements make it one of the most practical premium SUVs available, with five-seat models offering 780 litres of boot space or 1,574 litres with seats folded.

The Discovery Sport delivers a well-balanced ride and handling experience, with a comfortable setup that suits family journeys and a surprising level of composure in corners. Current engine options include D165 and D200 mild-hybrid diesels, plus the P270e plug-in hybrid, with the D200 offering the best all-round performance for those carrying passengers or towing. However, potential buyers should be aware of the model's poor reliability reputation, though this can be mitigated with an extended warranty. Running costs are manageable for diesel models, with official figures around 40mpg, whilst later cars feature timing chains rather than belts, reducing maintenance expenses.

Best for: Families seeking a premium SUV with genuine off-road ability and flexible seating, those requiring seven-seat practicality without upgrading to a larger vehicle, and buyers willing to accept reliability risks for versatility and capability.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising reliability above all else, buyers seeking the lowest running costs, or those who need maximum third-row comfort for regular adult passengers.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Discovery Sport if: You're seeking a premium SUV with genuine off-road capability and flexible seven-seat practicality, or you need a versatile family vehicle without upgrading to a larger model.

Consider alternatives if: Reliability is your primary concern, you prioritise the lowest running costs, or you require maximum comfort for regular adult passengers in the third row.

Competitive Position: The Land Rover Discovery Sport is a strong contender in the premium compact SUV segment, offering unmatched versatility through its optional seven-seat layout and genuine off-road ability. Whilst the BMW X3 scores higher for expert rating and the Volkswagen Tayron offers comparable user satisfaction, the Discovery Sport's unique combination of practicality, capability and premium feel makes it compelling for families willing to accept its reliability challenges. The Tayron and GLB-Class are more conventional choices, but neither matches the Disco Sport's off-road credentials or seven-seat flexibility. For those prioritising versatility and adventure over absolute reliability, the Discovery Sport remains a distinctive choice.
