Land Rover Discovery Sport (2014-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Extremely capable off road | Poor reliability record |
| Versatile and practical seven-seat cabin | Five-seat models are worth less than seven-seaters |
| Well judged ride and handling balance | The car's weight takes the edge off its performance |
Quick Summary
The Land Rover Discovery Sport, launched in 2014 as a replacement for the Freelander, carved a niche in the premium SUV market with its optional seven-seat layout—a feature many rivals lacked. Its practicality is a key strength, with a spacious and flexible interior that includes a sliding middle row of seats and a decent-sized boot. A significant 2020 facelift improved the cabin with higher-quality materials and a sleek new touchscreen system, enhancing its upmarket feel. While the rearmost seats are best suited to children, their inclusion makes the Discovery Sport a uniquely versatile family vehicle.
On the road, the Discovery Sport prioritises comfort, delivering a smooth and composed ride that absorbs most bumps with ease. While its weight means performance is steady rather than sparkling, it handles corners with confidence and boasts the off-road capability expected of a Land Rover. However, potential owners should be aware of its below-average reputation for reliability and running costs. Fuel economy is mediocre across the range, with petrol models struggling to exceed 30mpg. Despite these concerns, its blend of comfort, practicality, and premium appeal makes it a compelling package.
Best for: Families needing a versatile and premium-feeling SUV with seven-seat capability, genuine off-road credentials, and a comfortable ride.
Not ideal for: Buyers who prioritise low running costs, trouble-free reliability, or sharp, sporty performance.

The Verdict
You should buy the Discovery Sport if: You need a highly versatile family SUV with a premium badge, a comfortable ride, and the flexibility of a seven-seat option.
Consider alternatives if: Rock-solid reliability, low running costs, and engaging performance are your main priorities.
Competitive Position: The Land Rover Discovery Sport holds a unique position in the premium compact SUV segment thanks to its seven-seat versatility and strong off-road heritage. While rivals like the BMW X3 may offer a sportier drive and others a more reliable ownership experience, few can match the Discovery Sport’s blend of practicality and go-anywhere capability. It is an excellent, well-rounded family car, provided you are prepared for the potential maintenance and running costs.

Had a feelander 2 and loved it so comfy and the discovery sport replaces it so hopefully lives upto its predecessor. I like the fact its good off road if you need it HSE black is the car for me
Pure class, so comfortable and great handling, you wont be disappointed.
Very nice to drive, relatively economical for a four wheel drive car, good brand.
Load space poor compared to similar cars therefore discounted as an option for us.
