Land Rover Freelander 2 (2006-2014) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Drives well on the road and off it | Reliability is not a strong point |
| Reasonably practical cabin | Unpopular front-wheel-drive model lacks off-road ability |
| Very stable tow car | The 3.2-litre petrol is exceptionally thirsty |
Quick Summary
The Land Rover Freelander 2 (2006-2014) is a compact SUV that combines on-road refinement with genuine off-road capability. Its smart, upmarket cabin accommodates four adults comfortably, whilst the 755-litre boot extends to 1,670 litres with rear seats folded. The reversible, waterproof boot floor is practical for muddy adventures. Although not the most spacious in its class, the Freelander 2 offers a blend of sophistication and ruggedness that appeals to those valuing year-round mobility and the promise of adventure.
The Freelander 2 is relaxing to drive with direct steering, a comfortable ride, and good refinement. The popular 2.2-litre turbodiesel TD4 engine offers reasonable economy, whilst the later 187bhp SD4 provides more performance. The earlier 3.2-litre petrol i6 is smooth and powerful but thirsty. Wise buyers should invest in a pre-purchase inspection by a Land Rover specialist, as reliability is not a strong point. The Freelander 2 is akin to a mini Range Rover, blending off-road prowess with on-road sophistication, though most owners will appreciate the latter more than the former.
Best for: Buyers seeking a capable SUV with genuine off-road ability, those needing a stable tow car, and drivers valuing year-round mobility and smart styling.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising reliability, those seeking maximum interior space, or those with high fuel budgets (particularly petrol models).
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Land Rover Freelander 2 | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 20.5% | 4.0/5 |

| BMW X3 F25 | 5/5 | 4.5/5 | 31.3% | 4.5/5 |
| Volvo XC60 | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 32.6% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Freelander 2 if: You seek a capable SUV with genuine off-road ability, need a stable tow car, or value year-round mobility and smart styling at an affordable price.
Consider alternatives if: Reliability is a priority, you need maximum interior space, or you prefer premium badge appeal and lower running costs.
Competitive Position: The Land Rover Freelander 2 (2006-2014) offers genuine off-road capability at a competitive price, making it attractive to adventure-minded buyers. However, it faces stiff competition from more reliable rivals. The BMW X3 F25 excels in overall quality and handling, whilst the Volvo XC60 offers superior user satisfaction and better value deals. The Audi Q5 provides a more premium alternative with better deal availability. The Freelander 2's unique strength lies in its authentic off-road prowess and towing capability, though potential buyers must factor in reliability concerns and the need for specialist servicing.

(27 reviews)Having had 2 HSE models from 2007 to 2017 I found them to be excellent vehicles. I had no problems with them and they covered all the bases for my travel and passenger needs.
Having owned 2 from 2007 to 2017 I enjoyed reliability, comfort, good economy for its size and the pleasure of driving it. Replaced it with a (Freelander 3 )the Discovery Sport.
Roomy, comfortable, well made and a joy to drive. Car is equipped with all the bells and whistles that I need and hopefully will last a good few years.
Excellent car in every way. The only downside is my wife wont let me drive it.
Excellent vehicle, great driving position. Full space in rear when lifting door. Max storage for large kit.
