Land Rover Freelander 2 (2006-2014) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Drives well on the road and off it | Reliability is not a strong point |
| Reasonably practical cabin | Unpopular front-wheel-drive model lacks off-road ability |
| Very stable tow car | The 3.2-litre petrol is exceptionally thirsty |
Quick Summary
The Land Rover Freelander 2 (2006-2014) is a compact SUV that combines on-road refinement with genuine off-road capability. Its smart, upmarket cabin comfortably seats four adults, though rear legroom is modest compared to rivals like the BMW X3. The 755-litre boot extends to 1,670 litres with rear seats folded, featuring a reversible waterproof cover. Available with a 229bhp six-cylinder petrol engine or a 2.2-litre turbodiesel, the Freelander 2 is relaxing to drive with direct steering, comfortable ride quality, and good refinement. The 2010 facelift introduced a more powerful 187bhp SD4 diesel variant, whilst all models benefit from a Haldex central coupling that automatically distributes torque to the rear wheels when needed.
The Freelander 2 appeals to those seeking year-round mobility and the promise of adventure, whether tackling muddy fields or enjoying sophisticated on-road driving. Its gutsy turbodiesel engines deliver good performance, with the SD4 achieving 60mph in 8.7 seconds. However, reliability is a concern, and prospective buyers should invest in a pre-purchase inspection by a specialist. Running costs are reasonable, particularly with the popular TD4 diesel, which achieves around 40mpg in real-world driving. The front-wheel-drive variant is less desirable due to reduced off-road capability, whilst the thirsty petrol engine suits only low-mileage drivers.
Best for: Buyers seeking a capable compact SUV with genuine off-road ability, those needing a stable tow car, and drivers wanting a blend of on-road sophistication and adventure capability.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising reliability above all else, those seeking maximum rear legroom, or drivers with high annual mileage considering the petrol engine.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Land Rover Freelander 2 | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 20.1% | 4.1/5 |
| Audi Q5 | 3/5 | 4.3/5 | 33.5% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW X3 F25 | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 32.8% | 4.5/5 |
| Volvo XC60 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 31.7% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Freelander 2 if: You seek a capable compact SUV with genuine off-road ability, need a stable tow car, or want a blend of on-road sophistication and adventure capability at a reasonable price.
Consider alternatives if: Reliability is your primary concern, you require maximum rear legroom, or you have high annual mileage and wish to avoid the thirsty petrol engine.
Competitive Position: The Land Rover Freelander 2 offers genuine off-road prowess that rivals like the Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Volvo XC60 cannot match. Whilst the BMW X3 F25 scores higher for expert rating and overall appeal, and the Volvo XC60 excels in user satisfaction, the Freelander 2 remains unique in its blend of adventure capability and on-road refinement. It represents excellent value for buyers prioritising off-road ability and towing capacity, though reliability concerns and lower deal availability mean rivals offer better overall value propositions. The Freelander 2 is the choice for those willing to invest in specialist maintenance for genuine Land Rover capability.

4.8 Overall rating
(9 reviews)Still own a 2013 SD4 SE - Fantastic vehicle - more capable off road than you would believe and a pleasure to drive on road. SD is considerably more punchy than TD. Mine now on 130 000 miles have no intention of selling her - will pass her on to family and will look for a slightly younger one to replace her. Key is to maintain according to the recommendations - then problem free.
Having had 2 HSE models from 2007 to 2017 I found them to be excellent vehicles. I had no problems with them and they covered all the bases for my travel and passenger needs.
Having owned 2 from 2007 to 2017 I enjoyed reliability, comfort, good economy for its size and the pleasure of driving it. Replaced it with a (Freelander 3 )the Discovery Sport.
Roomy, comfortable, well made and a joy to drive. Car is equipped with all the bells and whistles that I need and hopefully will last a good few years.
Excellent car in every way. The only downside is my wife wont let me drive it.
