The Range Rover Sport combines two highly distinct qualities: it’s brilliant to drive on and off-road. You could say the same about the conventional Range Rover, but the Sport takes the on-road handling aspect a step further, because it feels like a proper luxury performance car. Now in its third generation, the original was introduced in 2005 – the second followed in 2013 – and the bonkers fast SVR models are now counteracted by a plug-in hybrid. Do not think this is even remotely an economical car, though – running costs are extremely high and reliability has been patchy over the years. The Audi Q7, the BMW X5, and the Porsche Cayenne will probably be more dependable, but they lack the Range Rover Sport’s off-road prowess and outright appeal.
