Range Rover Velar Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Effortless and refined performance	Iffy reliability record
Stylish and imposing looks	Top-spec models are expensive
Plug-in hybrid is affordable to run if recharged regularly	A Porsche Macan S is sharper to drive and more affordable

Quick Summary

The Range Rover Velar is an appealing and stylish mid-size premium SUV that sits between the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport. Launched in 2017 and refreshed in 2023, it offers buyers the appeal of a full-size Range Rover in a more accessible and compact package. The Velar boasts excellent practicality with up to 1,374 litres of boot space, a flexible seating arrangement, and a fantastic driving position with 14-way electrically adjustable seats. Its refined and easygoing driving experience is complemented by a well-appointed, upmarket interior featuring quality materials and modern design.

The 2023 facelift introduced the superior Pivi Pro infotainment system with an 11.4-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and over-the-air software updates. Engine options range from efficient diesels achieving around 40mpg to petrol variants and a plug-in hybrid P400e with 40 miles of electric-only range. Air suspension, available on lower trims and standard on HSE and above, delivers a pillowy ride with adaptive ground clearance. However, potential reliability concerns and high running costs for top-spec models may deter some buyers. Diesel versions offer better fuel economy, whilst the PHEV suits those with regular charging access.

Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish, comfortable and well-equipped premium SUV with genuine off-road credentials, those wanting a more affordable alternative to larger Range Rovers, and drivers prioritising refinement and luxury over sharp handling.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those concerned about reliability, or drivers seeking the sharpest handling in the mid-size SUV segment.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Velar if: You're seeking a stylish, comfortable and well-equipped premium SUV with genuine off-road credentials, want a more affordable alternative to larger Range Rovers, or prioritise refinement and luxury over sharp handling.

Consider alternatives if: You are concerned about reliability, seeking the sharpest handling in the mid-size SUV segment, or are budget-conscious about running costs.

Competitive Position: The Range Rover Velar is a mixed proposition in the mid-size premium SUV market. Whilst it excels in styling, comfort and refinement, rivals like the Porsche Macan offer sharper driving dynamics and the BMW X5 delivers superior reliability and overall ratings. The Velar's strength lies in its distinctive design, practical interior and genuine off-road capability, making it an appealing choice for those prioritising luxury and versatility. However, potential reliability concerns and higher running costs for top-spec models mean it may not suit all buyers. The plug-in hybrid variant offers an affordable running option for those with regular charging access, whilst diesel versions provide excellent real-world fuel economy.
