| Pros | Cons |

Quick Summary
The Land Rover Range Rover Velar (2017-present) is a stylish and imposing premium SUV that sits between the Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover Evoque in the line-up. Launched in 2017 and updated in 2023, it offers buyers something akin to a Range Rover in a more accessible and compact package. With a 632-litre boot, excellent driving position with 14-way electrically adjustable seats, and a coupe-like roofline with flush-fitting, electrically retracting door handles, the Velar delivers on style and comfort. The 2023 facelift introduced the improved Pivi Pro infotainment system, making it significantly more user-friendly than earlier models.
The Velar is relaxing and refined to drive, with smooth engines ranging from 2.0-litre diesels to a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol, plus mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid options. The plug-in P400e variant, updated in 2023 with a larger battery, offers an electric-only range of 40 miles and affordable running costs if recharged regularly. Diesel versions achieve around 40mpg in real-world driving, whilst the plug-in hybrid is particularly economical for regular commuters. However, potential reliability concerns and high insurance costs should be considered, and top-spec models can be expensive. The Velar benefits from Land Rover's off-road prowess with all-wheel drive and Terrain Response technology, though rivals like the Porsche Macan offer sharper handling.
Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish, comfortable, and well-equipped premium SUV with genuine off-road credentials, those interested in plug-in hybrid technology, and drivers prioritising refinement and luxury over sharp handling.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those seeking the sharpest handling in the class, or buyers concerned about potential reliability issues and high running costs.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Land Rover Range Rover Velar | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 35.7% | 4.3/5 |

| Audi Q5 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 32.3% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Velar if: You're seeking a stylish, comfortable, and well-equipped premium SUV with genuine off-road credentials, interested in plug-in hybrid technology, or prioritise refinement and luxury over sharp handling.
Consider alternatives if: You are budget-conscious, seeking the sharpest handling in the class, or concerned about potential reliability issues and high running costs.
Competitive Position: The Land Rover Range Rover Velar is a compelling choice in the premium mid-size SUV segment, offering effortless refinement, striking styling, and genuine off-road capability. Whilst the BMW X5 and Audi Q5 may offer slightly better overall ratings and the Porsche Macan delivers sharper handling at a competitive price, the Velar stands out for its distinctive design, luxurious interior, and plug-in hybrid option. Its excellent user rating reflects strong owner satisfaction, though potential reliability concerns and higher running costs mean it's best suited to buyers prioritising style and comfort over outright value or driving dynamics.

5 Overall rating
(4 reviews)The features are great, absolutely nothing missing. There’s heated rear seats, and an electric tow bar not mentioned in the ad.
Very happy with the car, good value for the money, and reminds me of a smaller version of the sport
My 2021 Range Rover R-Dynamic P400e Velar SE performs magnificently on all terrains and in all weathers. The in-line turbocharged 4-cylibder 2.0 litre engine, combined with its rear axled electric motor provides a 400bhp punch. Driving the vehicle is a joy, the Velars exterior looks the part, bronze copper trimming from bonnet mounted air intakes, extenuating under the wing mirrors via the front wheel panels onto the the 2-front doors is pure class. The aerodynamics are aesthetic with thedoor handles conceal themselves into the vehicle on locking or driving off. The rear top fender, not only looks great, its purpose is to actually prevent wind resistance. The interior matches the vehicles exterior..brilliant. Mine is a twin-screened mount and its digital graphics or sharp 3-D images. The smooth leather bound steering wheel is class and its function buttons are easy-accessed. The ebony veneer with the silver metal that lines the counselling is gorgeous. The seats are a master class in comfort and build, the carpeting is rich too. A large boot, my Velar has it all. I would highly recommend any prospective buyer, considering a large luxurious PHEV, with good fuel economy, combined with performance, to go ahead and look the Velar P400e over.
Great car. Runs beautifully. Complex to learn features.
