Quick Summary
The Range Rover is the quintessential full-size luxury SUV, defining Land Rover's premium offering since 1970. It seamlessly blends genuine off-road capability with exceptional long-distance comfort and a high-end interior, making it a recognisable presence on UK roads. Positioned at the top of the Land Rover range, it competes with other luxury SUVs like the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS, and even more exclusive alternatives such as the Bentley Bentayga, offering standard four-wheel drive, advanced Terrain Response, and a choice of mild-hybrid petrol/diesel, powerful V8, and plug-in hybrid powertrains. Both standard and long-wheelbase versions are available, with the latter offering a seven-seat layout for added versatility, though the flagship SV model can exceed £160,000 before options. Driving the Range Rover, particularly the D350, is a sublime experience marked by refinement, powerful acceleration, and near-silent operation, even for a diesel. Its active air suspension and all-wheel steering contribute to outstanding comfort and poised handling, making it surprisingly agile in urban areas with a turning circle comparable to a Volkswagen Golf. Practicality is a strong suit, with a massive 818-litre boot (857 litres in the long-wheelbase seven-seater behind the second row) and a 'command' driving position. Technology includes a 13.1-inch Pivi Pro infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and comprehensive safety features. While expensive to buy and run, especially the V8s, the plug-in hybrids offer impressive electric range if regularly charged, and diesels provide reasonable long-distance economy, though servicing costs are high and long-term reliability remains a historical concern.
Best for: Drivers seeking the pinnacle of luxury SUV experience, unparalleled comfort, genuine off-road capability, and immense interior space. It's also ideal for those needing a versatile family vehicle with a seven-seat option or an executive chauffeur car, and for PHEV owners who can regularly charge to maximise efficiency.
Not ideal for: Buyers on a tight budget, those who prioritise flawless infotainment responsiveness, or those with significant concerns about Land Rover's historical reliability. It's also less suitable for drivers who prefer a compact and nimble city car, or those who cannot commit to regular charging for the plug-in hybrid variants.

The Verdict
You should buy the Range Rover if: You seek the ultimate luxury SUV, prioritising opulent comfort, exceptional refinement, genuine off-road capability, and vast interior space for family or executive travel.
Consider alternatives if: You are on a strict budget, demand a more responsive infotainment system, are concerned about historical reliability, or cannot regularly charge a plug-in hybrid.
Competitive Position: The Range Rover remains the definitive luxury SUV, masterfully blending supreme comfort, commanding presence, and formidable off-road prowess. While its high price tag, potential infotainment quirks, and historical reliability concerns mean it's not for everyone, its overall refinement, practical versatility, and extensive customisation options solidify its position as a class leader, often surpassing rivals in sheer luxury and capability.
