Lexus NX 300h (2015-2021) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Superb build quality | Not as fuel-efficient as the official figures suggest |
| Very unlikely to go wrong | Lots of road noise at speed |
| Comfortable and reasonably quiet if driven smoothly | Irritating infotainment system |
Quick Summary
The Lexus NX 300h (2015-2021) is an overlooked premium compact SUV that deserves far more credit than it receives. Often overshadowed by diesel-powered German rivals and lingering hybrid scepticism, the NX offers precision engineering, comprehensive standard equipment, and an exceptional reliability record. The self-charging hybrid powertrain combines a punchy 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a torque-rich electric motor, delivering all-four-wheel drive via a CVT automatic transmission that is refined and responsive when driven considerately.
The NX provides a very competent driving experience with strong low and mid-range torque, smooth engine refinement, and seamless transitions between electric and petrol power. Whilst real-world fuel economy sits closer to mid-thirties mpg rather than the claimed 54.3mpg, running costs remain reasonable given low CO2 emissions and the widening gap between petrol and diesel prices. With annual servicing and comprehensive hybrid health checks included, plus strong residual values bolstered by growing hybrid acceptance, the NX represents excellent long-term value. The cabin blends luxury and sophistication with acres of lush panelling and deep-pile carpets, though an eccentric infotainment system and somewhat restrictive interior space are notable drawbacks.
Best for: Buyers seeking trouble-free, reliable motoring with premium build quality, those valuing comfort and refinement, and drivers willing to embrace hybrid technology for lower running costs.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum interior space, drivers wanting intuitive infotainment systems, or buyers seeking the sportiest handling characteristics in the premium SUV segment.

The Verdict
You should buy the NX 300h if: You prioritise reliability and build quality, value comfort and refinement, seek lower running costs through hybrid technology, and appreciate premium features and equipment.
Consider alternatives if: You demand the sportiest handling, require the most intuitive infotainment, or need maximum interior space for passengers and luggage.
Competitive Position: The Lexus NX 300h (2015-2021) stands as a compelling alternative in the premium compact SUV segment, offering unmatched reliability and build quality at a competitive price point. Whilst the BMW X3 edges ahead on expert rating and the Volvo XC60 offers a higher overall CarGurus rating, the NX 300h delivers exceptional user satisfaction and represents outstanding value for buyers prioritising dependability and long-term ownership costs. Its hybrid powertrain provides a distinct advantage in fuel economy and environmental credentials, making it an increasingly attractive proposition as hybrid acceptance grows. For those willing to overlook styling preferences and infotainment quirks, the NX 300h delivers trouble-free motoring that rivals cannot match.

5 Overall rating
(4 reviews)Lexus is a name that can be trusted in terms of reliability and fuel efficiency.
Quality finish and quality materials. Very comfortable to drive with excellent seats. Good range of interesting technical toys to play with and all you will want as far as extras i.e. heated seats etc.
Safety, systems excellent, good vision and driving position. Roomy interior , has a spec safer spare wheel. Build quality excellent. The car for its size is ideal for easy parking in uk parking bays If find the ride is a bit “bumpy” . Price was good value from Lexus Leicester. Compared it with the Hyundai Tucson hybrid, had concerns about the smaller engine on the Hyundai (1.6) as I understand they can have valve problems over the longer term compared to the Lexus (2.5) engine type.
Brilliant Lexus quality vehicle with great comfort Thank you Lexus owner
