It’s an excellent car and has many features that you seldom find in the market at that price.

The car is superbly appointed and built. The main issue is to do with the relatively small mileage you get on battery power, and the motorway mpg is not great. However, it is a fantastic car.

Lexus RX 450h (2015-2023) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| The hybrid is fuel-efficient for a luxury SUV | The seven-seat RX L is thirstier than the five-seat RX |
| Well-deserved reputation for reliability | Doesn't drive as well as a BMW X5 or Porsche Cayenne |
| Superb service from Lexus dealers | The RX 200t is thirsty |
Quick Summary
The Lexus RX 450h (2015-2023) is an understated luxury SUV that prioritises comfort, refinement, and reliability over aggressive styling or dynamic handling. This fourth-generation model offers plenty of room for five passengers, with the longer RX L variant providing optional seven-seat capability. The hybrid powertrain delivers impressive fuel economy of 35.7-36.2mpg combined, making it competitive amongst premium large SUVs. Well-equipped across all trim levels, from the entry-level SE to the top-tier Premier, the RX 450h combines luxurious appointments with practical features and comprehensive safety technology.
The RX majors on comfort with an absorbent ride and whisper-quiet operation, particularly in town where the hybrid glides on electric power. Whilst not as sharp to drive as rivals like the BMW X5, its exceptional build quality, proven reliability, and outstanding dealer support make it an exceptionally painless car to own. The earlier RX 200t turbocharged petrol option, discontinued in 2017, offers keener pricing but significantly worse fuel economy. For buyers seeking a customer-focused ownership experience with luxurious comfort and dependable performance, the RX 450h is a compelling choice.
Best for: Buyers prioritising comfort, reliability, and refinement; those seeking a fuel-efficient luxury SUV; customers valuing excellent dealer support and low maintenance costs; families needing seven-seat capability (RX L).
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking the sharpest handling dynamics; those wanting plug-in hybrid or fully electric options; buyers on a tight budget (used RX 200t offers better value).
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lexus RX 450h | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 25.0% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW X5 | 5/5 | 4.3/5 | 33.3% | 4.5/5 |
| Volkswagen Touareg | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 34.8% | 4.2/5 |
| Audi Q7 | 5/5 | 4.6/5 | 35.0% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the RX 450h if: You prioritise comfort, reliability, and refinement; seek a fuel-efficient luxury SUV; value excellent dealer support; or need seven-seat capability with the RX L variant.
Consider alternatives if: You want the sharpest handling dynamics, prefer plug-in hybrid or fully electric options, or are seeking the best value deals in the premium SUV segment.
Competitive Position: The Lexus RX 450h is a strong contender in the premium large SUV market, offering exceptional reliability, comfort, and refinement. Whilst the BMW X5 and Audi Q7 score higher for expert ratings and offer more dynamic driving experiences, the RX 450h's superior user rating (5.0/5) reflects its reputation for dependability and customer satisfaction. The Volkswagen Touareg offers better value deals, but the Lexus excels in long-term ownership costs and dealer support. For buyers prioritising peace of mind and luxurious comfort over driving excitement, the RX 450h represents an exceptionally sensible choice.
