MINI (2013-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Lively and entertaining to drive | The Convertible has a small boot |
| The EV is ideal around town | Ungainly looks if you choose the five-door |
| John Cooper Works GP cars are very quick | More powerful models can wear out tyres quickly |
Quick Summary
Now in its third generation under BMW's stewardship, the MINI remains one of the most alluring hatchbacks on sale. The current F56 model arrived in early 2014 and is bigger than its predecessor, with an all-new platform and engine range. A five-door version followed, offering improved rear seat space and practicality compared to the notoriously cramped three-door. The Convertible features a powered fabric hood, whilst the engine line-up includes turbocharged petrol units ranging from 134bhp in the Cooper to 302bhp in the John Cooper Works, plus an all-electric option since 2019 and frugal diesel engines for second-hand buyers.
The current MINI is the most grown-up version yet, being physically larger and more practical than its predecessors whilst maintaining the lively, entertaining handling characteristics that have defined the brand for decades. The five-door model is appreciably larger inside and out, making rear seat space considerably more bearable for adults, whilst the boot is now closer to that of a supermini. Running costs vary enormously depending on powertrain; the Electric is the cheapest to run at around £9 per charge for 100 miles of range, whilst diesel models achieve upwards of 50mpg and petrol variants no more than 35mpg. The TLC servicing package, transferable between owners, covers servicing for five years or 50,000 miles, offering significant savings on main dealer costs.
Best for: Drivers seeking a fun, entertaining hatchback with premium styling, those wanting an all-electric city car, buyers interested in high-performance variants, and those valuing versatility across three-door, five-door, Convertible, and estate options.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum rear seat space or large boots, those seeking the lowest purchase prices, or drivers wanting the most economical standard petrol engines.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MINI | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 35.9% | 4.4/5 |
| Fiat 500 | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.8% | 4.2/5 |
| DS 3 | 3/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.8% | 4.0/5 |
| Audi A1 | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.2% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the MINI if: You seek a fun, entertaining hatchback with premium styling, want an all-electric city car, are interested in high-performance variants, or value versatility across multiple body styles.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum rear seat space, require large boots, seek the lowest purchase prices, or want the most economical standard petrol engines.
Competitive Position: The MINI (2013-present) is a strong contender in the premium hatchback market, offering superior expert ratings and overall CarGurus scores compared to its key rivals. Whilst the Fiat 500 achieves higher user ratings, the MINI excels in driving dynamics, versatility, and technology. The MINI's lively handling, entertaining character, and diverse powertrain options—including an all-electric variant—set it apart from the Audi A1 and DS 3. For buyers valuing fun, style, and premium quality over maximum practicality, the MINI represents an excellent choice in its segment.

What people say
The mini was in good condition and good value for money
It's exactly the perfect car for me at this time of my life. Small, compact and economical. Two seats are perfect for me, as I rarely have anyone else in my car. Extremely happy with my purchase. Looking forward to many happy trips in my little Mini
I thought the car was great value with plenty of features, low mileage and great to drive.
Nice loved the heated leather seats panaramic roof and 2l engine
This is a lovely car to drive, very firm, holds the road, very nippy! Goes really fast if you want too. It looks great too. One downside is that my model doesnt do android play or have sat nab, which I thought should be standard.
