Mazda CX-3 (2015-2021) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Attractive looks | Not as roomy in the back or boot as some rivals |
| Reasonably strong engines | Doesn't drive with the verve you'd expect of a Mazda |
| Well equipped as standard | A Skoda Kamiq has a more comfortable ride |
Quick Summary
The Mazda CX-3, on sale from 2015 to 2021, was a small crossover SUV positioned in a highly competitive segment. It stood out with its sleek exterior design, though its cabin, while smart in places, could feel dull and used some cheaper plastics. Practicality was not its strongest suit, with less rear headroom and boot space (350 litres) compared to some rivals, and fixed rear seats. While Mazdas are often known for their driving dynamics, the CX-3 offered a less involving experience than expected, with body roll and a ride quality that struggled with bumps, even after a 2018 update. However, its three engines (a 1.8-litre diesel and two 2.0-litre petrols) provided decent performance, and Mazda's SkyActiv technology ensured competitive running costs, with real-world figures around 55mpg for diesel and 40-46mpg for petrols. Standard equipment was good across its simple trim levels, and while the infotainment system could be clunky, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were available.
Best for: Drivers seeking a stylish small SUV with good standard equipment, competitive running costs, and Mazda's reputation for reliability.
Not ideal for: Buyers needing maximum rear passenger space or boot capacity, drivers prioritising engaging handling or a very comfortable ride, or those who want a consistently premium interior feel.

The Verdict
You should buy the CX-3 if: You're seeking a stylish small SUV with good standard equipment, competitive running costs, and Mazda's reputation for reliability.
Consider alternatives if: You need generous rear passenger or boot space, prioritise engaging driving dynamics, or seek a consistently premium interior feel.
Competitive Position: The Mazda CX-3 is a visually appealing compact SUV that offers good standard equipment and competitive running costs thanks to Mazda's SkyActiv technology. While it may not lead its class in terms of practicality, driving dynamics, or ride comfort compared to rivals like the Skoda Kamiq or Seat Arona, its reliability and attractive design make it a strong option for buyers prioritising style and value in a crowded segment.
Mazda CX-3 Review
*The Overall CarGurus rating: that informs these recommendations is based on CarGurus' proprietary market data from January 2026, CarGurus expert reviews, and CarGurus user reviews.
4.4 Overall rating
(9 reviews)The car is packed full of features that you would pay a fortune for in a European car: Sat Nav, parking sensors, lane departure warning, cruise control, electric folding mirrors and heated seats! All this at the price of a small family car. The boot could be larger but its adequate for our purposes. It compares well to tha Honda HRV and the Toyota CHR but both of them are pricier.
For a small car this has a lot going for it. I struggled to find a replacement for my Subaru Outback and this came closest to it. Yes its not got the luxury of the Subaru but it has plenty of its own. The only dessapointment is the boot size. Great little car
Compact crossover with a lot of car for your money. Some quirky little controls which could be made easier but over a comfy ride and very stylish look. Would recommend the automatic in this model. Great little manual option on the gear drive consul with the flick of a the wrist.
Lot of kit for your money but they don’t hold there value that well
Basic inside no special features not worth the money
