Mazda CX-5 (2017-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Agile and involving to drive | No seven-seat option |
| Eye-catching looks | Some rivals have bigger boots |
| Diesels combine strong performance and fuel economy | Petrols feel a bit gutless at low revs |
Quick Summary
The Mazda CX-5 (2017-present) is a highly engaging SUV, benefiting from Mazda's sports car DNA, offering superior driving dynamics and a supple ride compared to many rivals. Its interior is stylish, built with quality materials, and features an intuitive infotainment system. All trim levels are well-equipped, with even the base SE-L including LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, and adaptive cruise control.
While it doesn't offer a seven-seat option or the largest boot (522 litres), its 40/20/40 split rear seats provide good versatility and comfortable space for four. Running costs are reasonable, particularly for the 2.2 Skyactiv-D 150 diesel, which achieves 40-45 mpg, and the inclusion of a metal timing chain reduces long-term maintenance. The CX-5 is a reliable, hassle-free SUV with distinct style and flair.
Best for: Drivers who prioritize driving dynamics and a sporty feel in an SUV, buyers seeking eye-catching styling and a premium-feeling interior, and those looking for a reliable and well-equipped SUV, particularly with an economical diesel engine.
Not ideal for: Buyers needing a seven-seat SUV, those who require the absolute largest boot capacity in the segment, or drivers who prefer strong low-down grunt from a petrol engine.

The Verdict
You should buy the CX-5 if: You're a driver who prioritizes dynamics and a sporty feel in an SUV, seeking eye-catching styling and a premium-feeling interior, or looking for a reliable and well-equipped SUV, especially with an economical diesel engine.
Consider alternatives if: You need a seven-seat SUV, require the absolute largest boot capacity in the segment, or prefer strong low-down grunt from a petrol engine.
Competitive Position: The Mazda CX-5 (2017-present) carves out a strong niche in the crowded SUV market by prioritizing driving pleasure and premium feel. While it foregoes a seven-seat option and isn't class-leading in boot space, its attractive styling, high-quality cabin, and engaging dynamics make it a standout choice. It represents a sophisticated and reliable option for buyers who value a sporty driving experience combined with everyday practicality.

4.7 Overall rating
(27 reviews)Lovely comfortable ride with plenty of power if you need it. A very reliable, modern car with all the current features. My favourite is the heads up display and also the infotainment capabilities on screen. I’m very happy with the CX5.
This car was one of many SUVs I looked at and it had everything and more. But unfortunately Ive gone with a Renault kadjar as I owned one previously.
Well made, well appointed, A joy to drive. My second, would I buy a third?...... definitely! Antonymac
This car has all features and low carbon emission and good fuel economy other models are Toyota RAV4 2 .0 diesel and Honda CR-V are comparable
Ticked all the boxes. Great kit great looks fabulous to drive. Handles more like a car than a big SUV.
