Mazda CX-5 (2026) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Good ride comfort | No hybrid or plug-in hybrid options |
| Roomy and practical interior | Engine lacks a bit of power |
| Handles well for an SUV | Over-reliance on touchscreen for some core controls |
Quick Summary
The Mazda CX-5 (2026) is a family-favourite SUV that represents a fine evolution of its predecessor. Measuring nearly 4.7 metres long, it positions itself at the larger end of the family SUV sector, offering dimensions equivalent to the Honda CR-V and Vauxhall Grandland. The latest model features a sleeker, more modern design whilst retaining the familiar character Mazda loyalists know and love. It's powered by a 2.5-litre petrol engine with mild hybrid technology, producing 139bhp and delivering zero to 62mph in 10.5 seconds. Available in four trim levels (Prime-Line, Centre-Line, Exclusive-Line, and Homura) with front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive options, the CX-5 comes with a standard six-speed automatic gearbox.
The interior has undergone significant transformation with a large-format touchscreen replacing traditional climate controls and rotary dials, creating a cleaner, more contemporary cabin with premium-quality materials. Practicality is outstanding, with rear-seat space that's almost limousine-like, offering 64mm more knee room than before. Boot space has grown to 583 litres, expanding to 2,019 litres with the rear seats folded. The CX-5 still drives with characteristic Mazda dynamism, featuring engaging steering feel, precise handling, and a more compliant ride than previous generations. Running costs are reasonable, with Mazda targeting around 40mpg for front-wheel-drive models, though real-world figures suggest approximately 35mpg is achievable. The non-turbocharged engine design prioritises long-term reliability and real-world fuel economy over laboratory figures.
Best for: Mazda loyalists seeking a spacious family SUV, drivers prioritising ride comfort and practicality, and those valuing engaging driving dynamics in an SUV.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrains, those requiring maximum engine responsiveness, or drivers preferring traditional physical controls for climate and ADAS functions.

| Mazda CX-5 | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 32.9% | 4.3/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the CX-5 if: You're a Mazda loyalist seeking a spacious family SUV, prioritise ride comfort and practicality, or value engaging driving dynamics in an SUV.
Consider alternatives if: You require hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrains, demand maximum engine responsiveness, or prefer traditional physical controls for climate and ADAS functions.
Competitive Position: The Mazda CX-5 (2026) is a strong contender in the family SUV market, offering excellent practicality, a roomy interior, and engaging driving dynamics. Whilst the Kia Sportage edges ahead with a five-star expert rating and the Volkswagen Tiguan impresses with user ratings of 4.8 out of 5, the CX-5 holds its own with a solid 4.3 overall CarGurus rating. The MG HS offers better value with 37.0% good or great deals, but the Mazda's focus on ride comfort, handling agility, and long-term reliability makes it an excellent choice for those seeking a well-rounded family SUV. The lack of hybrid options may disappoint some, but the non-turbocharged engine prioritises real-world fuel economy and durability.

Lovely comfortable ride with plenty of power if you need it. A very reliable, modern car with all the current features. My favourite is the heads up display and also the infotainment capabilities on screen. I’m very happy with the CX5.
