Mazda MX-30 (2020-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Classy and unusual looks	Fairly short range
Handles well and rides comfortably	Awkward rear-hinged back doors
Low running costs	Smaller-than-average rear seats

Quick Summary

The Mazda MX-30 is a distinctive hatchback-SUV crossover available as a pure electric model with an official range of 124 miles, or as an R-EV range extender with around 50 miles of electric range plus a 380-mile total range using a rotary petrol engine. Whilst not the fastest EV, with a 0-62mph time of 9.2 seconds in the full EV version, it attracts buyers with its quirky-yet-classy exterior styling, smart interior featuring retro-inspired design and cork inserts, and excellent equipment levels across all trims. The front doors open conventionally, but the rear doors are rear-hinged, requiring the front doors to be open to access the back seats—a design that offers a pillarless opening but can prove awkward in tight parking spaces.

The MX-30 is peachy to drive, with good acceleration, precise steering, and five brake regeneration modes via steering wheel paddles. The ride is cushy and comfortable, though body lean in corners is noticeable. A 366-litre boot with a squared-off floor provides reasonable luggage space, though rear legroom is limited despite the car being similar in size to a Ford Focus or Volkswagen ID.3. Running costs are low, with competitive servicing intervals every 12,500 miles or 12 months. However, depreciation has been significant, with used examples available at around half their original price, making the MX-30 an attractive proposition on the used market for those prioritising style and driving experience over maximum range.

Best for: Buyers seeking a compact, stylish electric car with excellent design and driving dynamics, those considering the R-EV range extender for longer journeys, and used car shoppers wanting to save thousands versus new prices.

Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum range, families needing spacious rear seating, or drivers uncomfortable with the rear-hinged door design in tight parking spaces.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the MX-30 if: You're seeking a compact, stylish electric car with excellent design and driving dynamics, considering the R-EV range extender for longer journeys, or looking for a used model to save thousands versus new prices.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum range, need spacious rear seating for families, or are uncomfortable with the rear-hinged door design in tight parking spaces.

Competitive Position: The Mazda MX-30 finds clear air in the crowded EV market through its distinctive styling, quality interior, and engaging driving experience. Whilst the Nissan Leaf and Peugeot 208 offer longer ranges and better value, and the Honda e provides superior five-door practicality, the MX-30 stands out for those prioritising design substance and desirability. The R-EV range extender addresses range concerns effectively. On the used market, significant depreciation makes the MX-30 an attractive proposition for style-conscious buyers unwilling to compromise on driving pleasure.
