Mazda3 (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Stunning styling for a family hatchback | Far from the most spacious car in its class |
| High-quality fit and finish | Naturally aspirated petrol engines need lots of revs |
| Satisfying to drive, with nimble handling and a comfortable ride | Relatively high emissions |
Quick Summary
The Mazda3 (2019-present) is lauded as one of the best-looking family hatchbacks, featuring soft, shapely curves inspired by acclaimed concept cars. Its cabin exudes quality and simplicity, though rear passenger space can feel dark and cramped. The hatchback offers a respectable 358 litres of boot space, expanding to 1,026 litres with the seats folded. Even entry-level trims come well-equipped with features like adaptive cruise control and an 8.8-inch infotainment system, operated by a rotary dial rather than a touchscreen.
Mazda has engineered a calm, composed, and mature driving experience, characterised by light, precise controls and a comfortable ride. It exclusively offers naturally-aspirated Skyactiv-G or Skyactiv-X petrol engines, which appeal to drivers who prefer to rev the engine rather than rely on turbochargers. Running costs are competitive, with the 178bhp Skyactiv-X achieving 48.7mpg and 131g/km CO2, though emissions are generally higher than some hybrid rivals.
Best for: Buyers who appreciate distinct design, a finely tuned driving experience, and need enough space for a modest family.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum rear passenger space, powerful low-rev engines, or low emissions for company car tax.

The Verdict
You should buy the Mazda3 if: You appreciate distinct design, a finely tuned driving experience, and need enough space for a modest family.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum rear passenger space, powerful low-rev engines, or low emissions for company car tax.
Competitive Position: The Mazda3 is a thoroughly likeable car in the family hatchback segment, offering distinct design, a finely tuned driving experience, and high-quality fit and finish. While it may not excel in rear passenger space or low-end engine punch due to its naturally-aspirated engines, its overall maturity, comfort, and engaging drive make it a strong contender for those willing to overlook these minor shortcomings. Its smart infotainment and generous equipment levels further enhance its appeal.

(13 reviews)Love the Mazda 3, nippy wee car, great spec and looks good.
I really love the features of the car. I personally got the Sport GT cause I wanted everything the car has to offer, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, Bose sound system, 360 degree surround view camera, e.t.c. You will have to pay a lot more to get these in other car models. The car is fun to drive.
I chose a Mazda 3 Tamura 2013 , the car is in superb condition. about the price for a low mileage car. It has many extras and the inside is beautiful too. Its a fabulous car to drive. There is nothing l can think of that is missing. I havent looked at any other makes , l wanted one similar in size to my old Astra, but this is much better quality.
I love the Mazda3, Matt who looked after me was so helpful and lovely to talk to, I’ve always had VW but thought for a change and a longer car as I have a baby, I absolutely love it, smoothest drive I’ve ever had, really comfy seats, I don’t think I’ll change to vw again !
Lovely car, very reliable. Nice interior, large boot. Lots of nice features ie electric folding mirrors, control of wipers speed, all electric windows, electric windows block to stop child playing with buttons.
