Mazda6 (2013-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Enjoyable to drive | Not as roomy as the Skoda Superb |
| One of the most reliable big family cars | Petrol engines need a lot of revs |
| Lots of standard equipment | No plug-in hybrid |
Quick Summary
The Mazda6 (2013-2022) is a seriously good family car that's spacious, affordable, well-equipped, safe, and hardy. This third-generation model uses Mazda's own platform and engines, departing from earlier Ford Mondeo-based versions. It's brilliant to drive, borrowing characteristics from the MX-5 sports car, making it far more engaging than your average saloon or estate. Available as both a saloon and Tourer (estate), it offers a 480-litre boot in the saloon and 522-litre in the estate, though rivals like the Skoda Superb provide more rear legroom and boot space.
The Mazda6 launched with 2.0-litre petrol engines (143bhp or 163bhp) and 2.2-litre turbodiesel options (148bhp or 173bhp). The lower-powered diesel is particularly gutsy and ULEZ-exempt, achieving around 50mpg in real-world driving, whilst the petrol manages approximately 40mpg. Equipment levels are generous, with even entry-level trims featuring Bluetooth, USB charging, alloy wheels, and parking sensors. A 2016 model or later is recommended for the improved seven-inch touchscreen with rotary controller; from 2019, an eight-inch screen became standard. As a used buy, the Mazda6 represents fantastic value due to steep depreciation, offering reliability and enjoyment for less than most alternatives.
Best for: Drivers seeking an engaging, reliable, and affordable family car with excellent standard equipment and enjoyable driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum interior space (like a Skoda Superb), those needing plug-in hybrid options, or drivers wanting petrol engines that don't require high revs.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

| Skoda Superb | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 34.8% | 4.4/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Mazda6 if: You're seeking an engaging, reliable, and affordable family car with excellent standard equipment and enjoyable driving dynamics.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum interior space, need plug-in hybrid options, or want petrol engines that don't require high revs.
Competitive Position: The Mazda6 (2013-2022) is a strong contender in the used family car market, offering excellent value and engaging driving dynamics. Whilst rivals like the Skoda Superb provide more space and the Volkswagen Passat offers a broader engine range, the Mazda6's steep depreciation makes it an outstanding used buy. Its reliability, enjoyable handling, and generous standard equipment make it a highly sensible choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking a car that's genuinely fun to drive. It's much easier to recommend as a used purchase than new, with fantastic deals available on second-hand examples.

4.5 Overall rating
(6 reviews)The vehicle is driving very well. Its condition is great given the manufacturing year. Interior electronic functioning well.
Executive car. People turn too look at it, especially in white. Gorgeous rims. I love this car. Runs great, easy to have a good mpg average but at the same time it flies when you press the pedal.
Smashing car , good drive and great fuel consumption
Amazing car, plain petrol ,plenty of power and the colour is amazing Soul red
I have test driven a diesel model which I find a little sluggish! It was a 2L engine. I may go for the petrol engine next time. Maybe a 2.5L diesel might be a bit more responsive but I would go for a petrol engine (2Litre)
