Mercedes-Benz B-Class (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Roomy and practical cabin | Cheaper MPVs offer more space with a humble badge |
| Tax-efficient plug-in hybrid | Not very exciting to drive |
| Comfortable ride | Plain-looking exterior |
Quick Summary
The Mercedes-Benz B-Class (2019-present) is an upmarket, five-seat MPV that prioritises comfort and practicality over driving excitement. The third-generation model launched to positive reviews, featuring the impressive MBUX infotainment system with pin-sharp twin-screen displays and an array of high-tech driver aids. The cabin is considerably more spacious than the A-Class, with generous rear-seat legroom and headroom suitable for tall passengers. Boot space is respectable at 455 litres, but clever sliding rear seats expand this to 705 litres when needed, rivalling larger MPVs.
A wide variety of engine options caters to different needs and budgets. Diesel choices include the 114bhp B180d, 146bhp B200d, and 185bhp B220d, all sharing the same four-cylinder engine in different states of tune. Petrol buyers can choose the 132bhp B180, 159bhp B200, or 221bhp B250, whilst the B250e plug-in hybrid offers an impressive 42-mile electric range and low CO2 emissions, making it tax-efficient for company car drivers. From 2022, the range was simplified to just the B200 and B200d for new purchases. The ride is smooth and absorbing, with a quiet cabin at motorway speeds, though the B-Class is better suited to steady driving than spirited cornering.
Best for: Buyers seeking an upmarket, practical family car with premium interior finish, those valuing comfort over driving dynamics, and company car drivers interested in the tax-efficient plug-in hybrid option.
Not ideal for: Drivers wanting the lowest-cost MPV with maximum space, those prioritising an exciting driving experience, or buyers who prefer distinctive exterior styling.

The Verdict
You should buy the B-Class if: You're seeking an upmarket, practical family car with premium interior finish, value comfort over driving dynamics, or are a company car driver interested in the tax-efficient plug-in hybrid option.
Consider alternatives if: You want the lowest-cost MPV with maximum space, prioritise an exciting driving experience, or prefer distinctive exterior styling.
Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz B-Class (2019-present) is a strong contender in the premium MPV segment, offering exceptional interior quality, practicality, and comfort. Whilst rivals like the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and Volkswagen Golf SV match or exceed it in user ratings, the B-Class distinguishes itself through its upmarket cabin finish and the availability of a tax-efficient plug-in hybrid. It's more expensive than the Ford C-Max but offers superior interior ambience and the prestige of the Mercedes badge. For buyers prioritising comfort, technology, and premium feel over raw value or driving thrills, the B-Class represents an excellent choice.

(9 reviews)Customers say
The Mercedes-Benz B-Class is well-regarded for its spaciousness, comfort, and competitive pricing in the used market. Owners consistently enjoy the smooth driving experience and excellent fuel economy, which makes it a practical choice for many. However, some drivers point out issues like excessive road noise and feel that it can be a bit pricey compared to other models in the Mercedes lineup. Overall, it combines a good driving experience with solid interior comforts, making it a reliable compact option.

What people say
Absouluty great car, second B class that I have purchased would highly recommend this car
Nice comfortable interior but excessive road noise not as slick as other Mercedes A bit pricey
Since the original A Class was converted to a saloon, this is the only reasonably-priced hatchback available from an up- market manufacturer. It is spacious, easy to drive, very well equipped (make sure that you get the SE version), available with a wide range of extras and very reasonably priced, especially on the second-hand market. The rear seats fold flat to give a huge carrying capacity, comparable to a large estate. The fuel consumption is very reasonable for a car of this size. The performance is not startling, even in the AMG version, but it handles well and makes an ideal family car.
The car was as described and it was in wonderful condition, well worth the money
Lovely little car to drive, plenty of space, quiet and with the refinements you would expect from Mercedes Benz. Performance is good, and this is not a slow car at all. Fuel economy at motorway speeds (70mph) is incredible. Expect 70-75mph depending on how you drive. Gearbox and engine are quiet and responsive. The different driving modes (economy, comfort, sport and individual) mean you can always find a driving mode that does what you need. Im a little disappointed it does not have heated seats and parking sensors at this price point (we will be adding both), but it does have a reversing camera which mitigates things to some degree.
