Mercedes-Benz B-Class (2018-Present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Roomy and practical interior	No longer a plug-in hybrid version
Model line-up keeps it simple	Not very exciting to drive
Comfortable ride	Looks plain on the outside

Quick Summary

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class is a five-seat MPV that launched in 2018 to positive reviews, combining high-tech driver aids with the impressive MBUX infotainment system. This third-generation model, known as the W247, offers considerably more space than its A-Class hatchback sibling, with generous rear-seat legroom and headroom suitable for tall passengers. The boot provides 455 litres for non-hybrid models, expanding to 1,530 litres with rear seats folded, and the rear bench slides forward to offer up to 705 litres of luggage space—a trump card over its BMW rival.

From the driver's seat, the B-Class prioritises comfort over excitement, delivering a smooth ride and quiet motorway cruising. The current line-up comprises the B200 mild-hybrid petrol (161bhp) and B200d diesel (148bhp), both offering reasonable fuel economy. The cabin features soft-touch materials and a sense of occasion, with the MBUX system dominating the dashboard. Running costs are competitive, particularly for the diesel on long journeys or the petrol for mixed driving. As an upmarket yet practical family car, the B-Class suits those preferring understatement to ostentation, with the Sport Executive trim offering excellent value without unnecessary expense.

Best for: Families seeking an upmarket, practical car with comfort and space; those preferring understated design; drivers wanting a premium interior without SUV styling.

Not ideal for: Buyers seeking an exciting driving experience; those wanting a plug-in hybrid option; drivers prioritising eye-catching exterior design.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the B-Class if: You're seeking an upmarket, practical family car with comfort and space; you prefer understated design; you want a premium interior without SUV styling.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise an exciting driving experience, require a plug-in hybrid option, or desire eye-catching exterior design.

Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz B-Class is a strong contender in the premium MPV segment, offering excellent practicality, a roomy interior, and a comfortable ride. Whilst rivals like the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and Ford C-Max match it on user ratings and overall CarGurus scores, the B-Class distinguishes itself through superior interior space, the exceptional MBUX infotainment system, and a more premium feel. However, it trails slightly on expert ratings and good/great deal availability. For buyers prioritising comfort, space, and understated luxury over driving excitement, the B-Class represents an excellent choice in the family MPV market.
